The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) seeks an outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic full-time Library Specialist to manage and supervise the Circulation Department of the Major Hillard Library.

This position requires exemplary customer service skills and outstanding organizational proficiency. Serves as a member of the library's management team and represents the Circulation Department in all library system initiatives.

Key responsibilities include overseeing all circulation, public service and cash management functions; selecting, training and evaluating subordinate staff; supervising public service coverage at the main service desk and supervising all financial transactions (fines, fees, lost items, printing requiring debit cards, etc.) and patron financial records.

Assists in the Adult Services and the Youth & Family Services Departments when needed.

Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, lift, return and retrieve books and materials from all shelving and maneuver a 100 lb. book cart.

Schedule is varied and includes days, evenings and weekend hours.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :

Library Specialist I:
  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree. In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience, including some supervisory experience.
Library Specialist II:
  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in library science, business (for positions in Acquisitions), or a closely related field. In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related, full-time equivalent experience including some supervisory experience.
Library Specialist III :
  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree. In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent library experience or similar corporate retail or business experience including some supervisory experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
License and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards are required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Automated circulation systems highly desired.
  • Public library related experience desired.
  • One year of actual, successful supervisory experience.
  • It is preferred that the Experience Requirements stated above are related and timely (within the last five years) with a minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
