About Shadyside 3 Pavilion:
3 Pavilion at UPMC Shadyside is a medicine teaching unit and is following a new model of care. This is a highly trained, team-oriented unit primarily caring for medical, cardiac monitored patients, and stroke patients. This is a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where you will gain experience with chest tubes, feeding tubes, trachs, and monitors. 3 Pavilion has a fast pace of work and a diverse patient population.
Act as a member of the healthcare team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing, and competency and able to provide care following UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and policies, and the State Board Regulations. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed UPMC provider.

Responsibilities:
- LPNs utilize nursing judgment, knowledge, and experience to participate in patient care planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- They communicate with RNs and healthcare teams when patient needs exceed their scope, skills, or when conditions change significantly.
- An LPN shall communicate with a licensed professional nurse and the patient's health care team members to seek guidance when:
- The patient's care needs exceed the licensed practical nursing scope of practice.
- The patient's care needs surpass the LPN's knowledge, skill, or ability.
- The patient's condition deteriorates or there is a significant change in condition, the patient is not responding to therapy, the patient becomes unstable or the patient needs immediate assistance.
- An LPN shall communicate with a licensed professional nurse and the patient's health care team members to seek guidance when:
- LPNs seek supervision for unfamiliar practices, adhere to established policies, and follow UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and the State Practice Act.
- They set holistic care goals with patient involvement and ensure comprehensive documentation to enhance communication among caregivers.
- LPNs focus on patient safety, quality, and satisfaction, fostering compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- They provide effective education to patients and families, seek feedback for continuous improvement, and identify opportunities for clinical and workplace enhancement.
- LPNs build productive relationships, demonstrate accountability, respect cultural differences, and promote a healthy work-life balance while addressing safety concerns in the workplace.
Qualifications:
- Successful graduation from a Licensed Practical Nursing Program approved by the State Board of Nursing.
- Experience in health care preferred, no LPN experience required.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills for providing age-appropriate care based on unit specifications.
- Understand principles of growth and development to assess and identify patients' age-specific needs.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, providers, and patients/families.
- Work effectively in a complex environment, managing multiple priorities and specialized equipment.
- Requires mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for patient handling.
- Computer skills necessary for using electronic health records.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- LPN must maintain state licensure where they are practicing or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
- A licensed practical nurse whose license has lapsed for 5 years or longer or has been placed on inactive status for 5 years or longer, may reactivate the license by following the state guidelines and would not be eligible to hire into an LPN role until that time.
- Must complete licensure examination within FOUR MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from the issue of the permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GPNs take the licensure examination within 4 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GPN position, at the discretion of the BU.
