Job Summary

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), you will play a crucial role in the recovery of patients following anesthesia administration. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians, you will provide compassionate and skilled nursing care to patients as they emerge from anesthesia, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the recovery process. Your attention to detail, clinical expertise, and commitment to patient well-being will contribute to the overall success of our PACU unit.

Responsibilities*
  1. Patient Monitoring and Observations:
    • Assist in the receiving of patients upon arrival to the PACU, including vital signs, pain level, consciousness, skin, bladder condition and surgical site condition.
    • Alert the RN or physician to any significant changes in patient condition or signs of distress.
    • Document observations accurately and promptly in the patient's medical record.
    • Utilize critical thinking to identify and prioritize patient needs, intervening promptly to address any concerns.
  2. Medication Administration:
    • Administer medications ensuring accurate dosage and proper documentation.
    • Monitor patients for any medication-related side effects or adverse reactions, taking appropriate action as necessary.
    • Provide continued education to patients and their families on post-operative medication regimens and potential side effects.
  3. Patient Advocacy and Support:
    • Advocate for patients' needs and preferences, ensuring their comfort and dignity throughout the recovery process.
    • Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families, addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
  4. Wound Care and Dressing Changes:
    • Perform routine wound care and dressing changes according to established protocols and physician orders.
    • Monitor surgical incision sites for signs of infection or complications, reporting any abnormalities to the registered nurse.
    • Provide continued patient education on proper wound care techniques and signs of infection, promoting optimal healing outcomes.
  5. Assistance with Patient Care:
    • Assist with patient transfers to and from the operating room, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
    • Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including positioning, ambulation, and toileting.
    • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure timely and effective delivery of patient care.


Required Qualifications*

Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the state of practice.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under supervision.

Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, push and lift throughout the shift.
  • Capable of lifting and moving patients with assistance as needed.
  • Visual and auditory acuity necessary to monitor patients and interpret medical equipment alarms.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a LPN
  • Previous experience in a hospital setting.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: Evenings; 10 hour shifts; variable shift start times, and may include scheduled weekend shifts.
