TITLE: Local Reading Specialist - Oneonta Elementary School

QUALIFICATIONS: An ARI local reading specialist shall have all of the following minimum qualifications:
  • The required Alabama Professional Educator Certificate.
  • A bachelor's degree and advanced coursework or professional development in the science of reading, such as multisensory language instruction, or comparable alternative training approved by the Alabama State Board of Education or the Alabama Literacy Task Force.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a successful elementary or literacy teacher.
  • A knowledge of scientifically based reading research, special expertise in quality reading instruction and intervention, dyslexia specific interventions, and data analysis.
  • A strong knowledge base in the science of learning to read and the science of early childhood education.
  • Excellent communication skills with outstanding presentation, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Exceptional abilities to work with both adults and students.
  • Characteristics of an on-going learner.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SUPERVISES: Students and assigned personnel

CONTRACT DAYS: 202 days

SALARY: Salary is based on appropriate step on the approved OCS salary schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.

JOB GOAL: To impact student learning by improving teacher practice, so that all students are reading on or above grade level by third grade by providing intensive, targeted professional development for elementary school teachers at one school.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  1. Attend school during assigned hours.
  2. Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state/federal laws.
  3. Attend faculty and other assigned meetings.
  4. Participate in the State Board and system required in-service and professional development.
  5. Assists in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  6. Perform reasonable duties necessary for the safe and effective operation of the school.
  7. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  8. Exhibit positive human relation skills and professional ethics.
  9. Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.
  10. Demonstrate competency in the use of technology.
  11. Contribute to the overall development of an effective school program.
  12. Coaching teachers in classrooms each day during reading instruction.
  13. Equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to help elementary students, with a K-3 focus, achieve grade-level reading or above.
  14. Working side by side with teachers to successfully implement lessons so that all students are reading on or above grade level by third grade.
  15. Providing targeted intervention to struggling elementary students.
  16. Collaborating with administrators and teachers to analyze and to utilize formative data that will inform instructional decisions/practices to change student performance trajectories.
  17. Implementing district reading plans and the Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts.
  18. Adhere consistently to an LEA/ARI approved schedule that includes time in pre-planned, daily coaching cycles with teachers and daily intervention instruction with at least one group of struggling readers so that reading goals are achieved.
  19. Demonstrate increasing expertise in research-based reading instruction appropriate to Grades K3.
  20. Plan and /or facilitate professional learning opportunities that will assist teachers in targeting student reading deficits; facilitating professional conversations; fostering student engagement; assessing student learning; reflecting on professional practice; or identifying next learning steps in order to achieve state, district, and school elementary reading goals.
  21. Participate actively and cooperatively in all ARI regional support visits and training in order to meet agreed-upon personal outcomes and all school, state, and district established reading goals for elementary grade levels.
  22. Model exemplary work ethic by actively coaching teachers, teaching struggling readers, and participating as a fully functioning member of the school staff daily, so that teacher capacity is built, and efficacy is achieved.
  23. Coach teachers in instruction of students for all tiers of reading in order to reach the goal of students performing at or above grade level in reading by the end of third grade.
  24. Exhibit winsome human relations skills that will encourage professionals toward continuous growth in their own learning and challenge students toward ever-increasing levels of academic achievement.
  25. Plan regularly with school, district, and regional support staff and ALSDE staff in order to reach goals of all students reading on grade level by third grade.
  26. Assist school administrators and teachers in analyzing and utilizing assessment data in all tiers of reading instruction.
  27. Collaborate with the principal to create a strategic plan for coaching to support and measure the impact of reading instruction according to the science of reading, school baseline data, and data from early reading assessment systems.
  28. Monitor the reading progress of all students a minimum of three times per year and make recommendations for the adjustment of instruction according to specific student needs identified from multiple data points and aligned with the science of reading as specified in the strategic plan for coaching.
  29. Demonstrate competency in the use of computers and available technology.
  30. Lead, plan, and provide resources for additional reading support including before- and after-school tutoring and summer camp.
  31. Communicate concerns and requests to teacher in an appropriate and timely manner.
  32. Perform clerical tasks and maintain individual records for students as necessary.
  33. Perform other duties as might be reasonably assigned by the Principal or Superintendent or by direction of the Board.
