Job Description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the media specialist, the media assistant, a member of the media center team, provides students and staff with information about and instructional assistance in the use of current research technology, Internet, on-line services, CD-ROM, and traditional library materials and manages the school-wide library media computerized patron and material records systems. The media assistant performs the daily routine operations of the media center; is knowledgeable of instructional audio-visual equipment, and participates in a wide variety of school media center activities. Media assistants may give work direction to student aides and parent volunteers and help in the orientation and training of new media assistants. Work involves performing media center duties and requires considerable technical skill, the ability to learn independently, when necessary, new software in the media center hubs, and the ability to communicate this knowledge to students and staff. Employees in the class are required to learn media center procedures, to be detail-oriented, and to assume responsibility for the routine operations of the media center.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of computer research tools including the Internet, on-line resources, and CD-ROMs. Ability to adapt to new technologies. Ability to become proficient with computer applications (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphic presentation programs, e-mail, and on-line ordering) and the ability to impart this knowledge to students and staff effectively. Ability to operate and provide problem-solving for a variety of computers, printers, copiers, and audiovisual equipment or the ability to acquire such skills. Knowledge of library media center procedures, methods, terminology, routines and techniques. Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions. Ability to assist staff and students in locating appropriate materials. Knowledge of off-air recording and copyright guidelines. Excellent human relations and communication skills. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, and familiarity with Internet search strategies. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. or Completion of 30 semester hours of college course work and/or one year of experience working with children in instructional situations required if no associates degree. Experience in using computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and Internet. Experience working or volunteering in a library environment preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to an Associates degree, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
