What You Will Do

Prototype Fabrication Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG) is seeking qualified machinists to provide machining support for the fabrication of components vital to the Lab's mission. This position will be filled at either the Machinist 4 or 5 Level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.
The selected machinist will work in a team environment in both classified and unclassified work areas to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers. Machinist, Level 4 ($76,900 - $122,200)

The machinist will be required to work independently from complex drawings, sketches, CAD models, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, wire EDM's, and a variety of general machine shop tooling. They will manufacture complex parts made from a variety of materials with exacting tolerances.

Machinist, Level 5 ($83,900 - $136,600)

In addition to what was outlined for Level 4, as a Level 5 machinist you must be able to act as a lead for special projects and review activities for other machinists. Additionally, you must have extensive knowledge of the programming, set-up, and operation of 4 and 5 axis mill turn machines. Examples of these machines include Turret lathes with live tooling and Mazak Integrex Mill Turn machines.

Minimum Job Requirements:


Education & Work Experience at Level 4:
  • Associates degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies OR equivalent precision metalworking program AND 6 years experience OR 8 years prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 6 years' experience.

Education & Work Experience at Level 5:
  • Associates degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies OR equivalent precision metalworking program AND 10 years experience OR 12 years prototype experience OR Journeyperson qualification program AND 10 years experience.

Communication, Teamwork and Safety
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.

Machining
  • A strong knowledge of Mill and Wire EDM machining is helpful in this position, and knowledge of Lathe or Mill Turn skills is highly desired for this role.
  • Advanced ability to create 3D models using CAD software and the corresponding tool paths using CAM software along with intermediate knowledge of G&M Codes. You must be able to apply this knowledge to produce parts using conventional, CNC (to include 4 and 5 axis work), and advanced manufacturing techniques for parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005.
  • A knowledge of applied mathematics and proficiency in machining processes, tools, and operations to obtain various tolerances is required.
  • Proficiency in applied material properties and willingness to work with classified and hazardous materials.
  • Proven skills in operating lathes and an interest in building skills on 4 and 5 axis mill turn machines, including Turret lathes with live tooling for C and Y axis machining, and Mazak Integrex Mill Turn machines.

Drawings & Specifications
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and sketches which use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols to determine design factors such as size, shape, position and arrangement of features and parts comprising assemblies.
  • Ability to interpret and calculate specifications for project implementation and to verify that the end product meets requirements.
  • Level 5 must also have working experience analyzing and troubleshooting customer provided drawings and providing recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability.

Customer Service
  • Provide positive customer service by creating manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware and reviewing customer drawings to provide recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers to extract design intent.

Dimensional Inspection Knowledge
  • Advanced ability to perform precision measurements on parts using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, and verniers.

Tools & Operating Knowledge
  • Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment and devices.

Customer Service/Communication
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and grow excellent customer relations through excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience implementing policies and procedures for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Level 5 must have the ability to effectively supervise the work of other machinists and maintain a safe machine shop working environment.

Clearance
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance (the employer will support the selected candidate through this application process).

Desired Qualifications:

  • CAD/CAM experience; preferably SolidWorks, CREO or MasterCam.
  • Experience with classified materials machining and hazardous materials machining; including experience with materials having toxic, pyrophoric, or other hazardous characteristics.
  • Experience as a mentor or team leader.
  • Established DOE Q Clearance is highly desirable.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
