The Madeline Island Museum (MIM) is situated in La Pointe, Wisconsin on picturesque Madeline Island one half block up from the ferry dock. Located on Mooningwanekaaning, or "Madeline Island," the spiritual home of the Anishinaabeg, the MIM is a doorway to the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior History. The Operations Coordinator will play a pivotal role in assisting the MIM Site Director with business management of the gift shop and enhancing the guest experience.

The museum consists of the Capser Center with an auditorium and exhibit gallery, and also four historic buildings from the fur trade era that are filled with collections and artifacts. Staff work with colleagues to connect guests with the storied past of Madeline Island and one of the richest collections of Wisconsin history.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Madeline Island Museum Site Director, this position oversees guest services and manages essential financial and administrative functions. As the Operations Coordinator, this position also assists with the creation and execution of engaging interpretive programs and dynamic group tours. This role will also focus on boosting attendance and revenue, ensuring an exceptional visitor experience, and supporting the Site Director in the smooth day-to-day operations of the museum.

Salary Information

The salary will be between $26 - $28 per hour ($54,080 - $58,240) in accordance with the provisions of the current Compensation Plan. This position is in pay schedule 07, range 04; Civil service classification is Program and Policy Analyst. A12-month probationary period will be required.

Job Details

A combination of in-person on-site work hours and remote availability will be offered in November-February. The work is mostly on-site the rest of the year.

Qualifications

Please make sure to describe the following qualifications within your resume and/or letter of qualifications in order to be considered for this position.

Minimally qualified candidate will have experience in all of the following:
  • Skills in long-term and short-term planning and implementation.
  • Expertise in computer skills related to project management and program promotion (e.g. Asana, Microsoft programs) and graphic design abilities including work in creating programmatic advertising, posters, email communications, and social media posts that promote the museum, programs and events, and museum store.
  • Experience in museum and/or retail operations, or special programs and event operations.

In addition to minimum qualifications, a well-qualified candidate will have experience in one of the following areas:

  • Knowledge and experience in retail sales and merchandising, including inventory management
  • Expertise in planning, coordinating, and executing special events and programs including interacting with the public.
  • Experience in managing point of sales systems, daily cash handling, and daily ticketing systems.
