This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Major Range Test Facility Base (MRTFB) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

  • Repairing buildings, structures, fittings, partitions, and wood or wood substitute articles requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
  • Bracing, replacing, rebuilding or loosening supports and planks to maintain permanently installed wooden staging, walkways, and roofs.
  • Interpreting drawings, blueprints and specifications to select lumber and supplies and to determine layout and work sequences.
  • Performing maintenance and repair work on office hallways, stairwells and over the door lighting and ballast replacement.
  • Painting a variety of surfaces. Incorporating special finishing techniques such as marbling and baroque.
  • Repairing or cleaning elements of sewer, waste lines, water, and hot water systems in buildings.
  • Operating electric resistance welding machines and using manual gas torch welding processes
  • Performing maintenance on building wiring.
  • Constructing and repairing cement and concrete surfaces and structures.
  • Operate motor vehicles equipped with special purposes bodies such as dumpster or packer trucks; tractors; and self propelled or towed rollers.

  • This position must be able to obtain and maintain a commercial driver' license (CDL) within 12 months.
  • Subject to emergency call back after normal duty hours and on weekends and scheduled overtime requirements which are compensated by premium pay.
  • This position requires a medical evaluation/examination for new hires and current employees.
  • The work of this position is performed in all types of weather conditions.
  • This position may require use of protective clothing or equipment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to attend and complete various driving courses.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50-100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform maintenance work associated with more than one trade area such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, grounds work and other trades appropriate to this position. Knowledge of technical trade terminology, tools, and equipment in more than one area. Follow simple diagrams and/or drawings. Work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
  • Physical Effort: The work requires frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, stretching, and walking. Some of the work is performed from ladders scaffolds which require overhead work in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Army movement is considerable when nailing, mortaring, grouting, painting, and using such tools as handsaws, trowels, paint brushes, and planers. There is frequent lifting and carrying of items that weigh 50-100 pounds. Some of the work requires that the employee handle, with the use of hand truck, items weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Subject to falls, cuts, burns, bruises, broken bones, or other serious injury. Subject to extremes of weather including dust, wind, heat, rain, freezing temperatures, et cetera. May occasionally work at heights over 100 feet which are compensated by hazard duty pay. There is danger of falling from scaffolds, ladders, lowers up to 100 feet tall, and danger from flying splinters, chops, ceramics, glass, et cetera. There is frequent exposure to noise from various hand power tools, Work is done in areas that vary from "clean rooms" to areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. There is the possibility of exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, as well as discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, flash shield, or eye goggles. Some work exposes the worker to floor and deck surfaces which are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Subject to emergency call back after normal duty hours and on weekends and scheduled overtime requirements which are compensated by premium pay. May require use of protective clothing or equipment as authorized by the WSMR Safety Office. Requires the possession of a valid driver's license to perform incidental driving to and from actual work sites. Requires attendance and completion of various vehicle driving courses.???????

The work done in Socorro is part of the White Sands Missile Range. White Sands Missile Range is a unique tri-service facility for test, evaluation, research, and assessment of military systems and commercial products. Some attractions specific to Socorro are the Bosque Del Apache and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuges, Salinas National Monument, the Very Large Array, Etscorn and Magdalena Ridge Observatory's and New Mexico Tech University (Engineering, Research, Science and Technology).
