Duties
  • Operates a flood control dam to maintain reservoir elevations in accordance with the manual to maintain safe stream flows downstream which will accomplish the flood risk management mission.
  • Maintains structures, building, roads, and grounds utilizing various trade practices and safety and aesthetic value.
  • Utilizes diverse programs including but not limited to asset management, real estate, environmental, construction management, and safety in support of project administration.
  • Conducts or directs regular and periodic inspections of dams, dikes, channels, weirs, and/or comprising the project noting discrepancies or need for maintenance or repair services.
  • Operates diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Maintains combustion-powered vehicles equipment including tractors with loaders, backhoes, mowers, sidehill mowers, engines, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, and components.
  • Uses various tools, test equipment, and measuring devices.

Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and obtain and maintain a valid, Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 18 months of employment start date.
  • Must wear a Corps of Engineers uniform.
  • Must work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Pre-employment physical is required for this position.
  • Position is designated as a drug testing program position. Refraining from illegal drug use and submitting to drug testing, when directed, are conditions of employment.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-10 position without more than normal supervision by performing tasks such as 1) Performing maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, building, and/or grounds; 2) Operating diesel and gasoline powered vehicles including tractors, skid steers, and mowers; and 3) Utilizing a variety of tools and equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires constant arm and leg movement and reaching, bending, and turning to operate hand and foot controls when operating tractor, motor vehicle, or crane. Exerts effort to maintain balance and position at controls of equipment. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Works on scaffolds, ladders, and while suspended from overhead crane which require work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Exerts heavy physical effort frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing heavy loads, and operating heavy hand-held equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions including periods of extreme heat and cold, and inclement weather. Subject to cuts and bruises, electric shock, and falls from ladders or crane; injury from lifting and handling heavy materials and equipment; discomfort from noise, fumes, and vibrations of equipment; and a variety of hazards associated with operating vehicles and equipment, applying pesticides, and performing duties in the vicinity of flood control projects.

Education

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
