JOB DESCRIPTION:
Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE Maintenance Superviosr-Roofing.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Servers as first line supervisor and as required, participates in work assigned to skilled trade-related
section or section/s ("shops") and its staff (carpentry, grounds, glazing/roofing, lock/key/door, painting).
Develops and/or manages section's operations, schedules, budget, materials and personnel contracts, and
stock inventory. Coordinates section's human resources activities.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under general supervision of the Director or Assistant Director, Maintenance.
Incumbent has full range of supervisory and staff development responsibilities for assigned staff of skilled
and semi-skilled staff assigned to the unit.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the first line supervisory classification of the maintenance series and is differentiated from
Assistant Supervisors and from the Maintenance Supervisor II classification, which contain positions
supervising/managing electrical and plumbing sections, and the HVAC supervisory classifications. Plans
are reviewed by an administrator and assignments are given to level II mechanics (crew leaders) and
contractors with the Maintenance Supervisor I having responsibility for the efficient, timely and
economical accomplishment of assigned work and evaluation of staff.

School Board Policies and Policy Implementation Procedures, Arlington County Building Codes, OSHA,
EPA guidelines, rules, regulations and codes unique to specific trade(s) to which assigned.
CONTACTS
Building administrators and principals, supervisory and journey staff of other trades, procurement, vendor
and contractor management and staff, county government, police, fire and inspection staff, custodial
supervisors and custodial staff, other school staff and students, certain vendors.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Completion of high school (or GED), including some courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics,
and completion of formal or informal training equivalent to an apprenticeship in the trade to which
assigned, and considerable progressively more responsible experience in assigned trade(s), some of which
shall have been in a crew lead capacity; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that
would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Possession of a Commercial Drivers License. Some trades require trade or equipment specific licenses
and certifications (e.g.-asbestos removal certification, certified playground equipment inspector, etc.)
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
Strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects;
balancing self, materials and tools on high and/or slanted surfaces; assembling and disassembling
scaffolds and equipment; and operating or utilizing all tools, equipment and vehicles. Work requires
significant standing, bending, stooping, and working in tiring positions,

HAZARDS/ UNUSUAL DEMANDS
Works in a wide range of climatic conditions. Work may involve exposure to fumes, dust, sparks and
smoke and to loud noise and vibrations and require use of safety goggles, ear plugs, masks, safety shoes,
back braces, hard hats and gloves. Work may involve climbing onto roofs, ladders, scaffolds, and into
other high places. May be required to work unusual hours and to be in an on-call status in emergencies.
The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Incumbents in this class are
hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be
reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Possession of journey level knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the trade to which assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of the procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with
assigned trade.
Comprehensive knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations relevant to trades.
Good knowledge of trades specific training, supervision, and evaluation methods, and ability to conduct
trade specific staff development and training activities.
Ability to plan, supervisor and perform journey level tasks in the trade /trades to which assigned.
Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships, to resolve personnel and
technical problems, and to respond appropriately in hazardous situations.
Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams,
drawings, prints, schematics, etc.
Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and costs, etc, and ability to
maintain records.
Ability to plan, supervisor and perform journey level tasks in the trade /trades to which assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed; not all
incumbents perform all essential functions delineated)
Plans, manages, supervises and as required participates in construction, preventative maintenance and
repair tasks of assigned skilled trade or trades. For details of the kind and nature of essential functions
performed and/or supervised, refer to the class specifications for maintenance mechanics and grounds
mechanics.

Develops section's annual budget, financial projections, annual and long-range plans; manages section's
financial and operational activities.
Receives work requests (work orders) and coordinates with school principals and building administrators,
and other trades supervisors to schedule and prioritize projects on a regular and emergency basis.
Estimates amount, types, and costs of materials and equipment, crew size and individual staff skills
necessary to complete job in timely, safe, competent manner, taking into consideration budgetary and
work schedule issues; confers with crew leaders (mechanic II) for input.
Orders and approves payment for materials and equipment. Maintains materials, equipment and vehicle
inventory and oversees equipment and vehicle repairs and maintenance, using computerized systems.
Prepares work orders, work instructions, plans and diagrams for mechanics, or delegates preparation to
crew leader.
Determines whether work should be performed by contractors; issues work instructions to contractors;
coordinates between contractors and principals or building administrators; inspects and approves work of
contractors. May withhold payments to contractors when work is substandard or not completed in time
frame.
Coordinates with police, fire department, county inspectors and other officials with an interest in work of
assigned trade. Obtains building permits.
Coordinates with school and county staff regarding emergency planning. Organizes and directs
emergency activities of section.
Inspects on-going and completed work to ensure all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are
utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes. Resolves problems regarding
project that are beyond the scope of the project leader. Develops punch list prior to approving completion
and/or provides additional instruction, training and guidance to work crew as necessary.
Supervises emergency situations, damage, inclement whether response as it applies to assigned section
(e.g. snow removal, broken windows, leaking roofs, damaged locks etc.
Handles all human resources management activities for assigned staff, including recommending hiring
and firing, conducting or approving training, holding safety and staff meetings, and preparing and
conducting performance evaluations.
Participates in project set up, work, and clean up as necessary.
Develops and/or participates in preparation of materials and contractor bids, and may participate in
contract negotiations.
Prepares reports, maintains section time and attendance records, approves leave, and maintains section
reference data, using computer applications and databases.
Develops system-wide preventative maintenance schedule to ensure trade-relevant systems and
equipment remain operational or are scheduled for repair or replacement.

Performs journey level mechanic tasks as required.
Performs related work as required, or assigned.

Hiring salary range of $29.30 to $52.90 annually based upon 24/25 pay plan.
