The City of Roanoke is seeking a Streetsweeper for the night shift to serve in the Stormwater division of the Department of Public Works. This position primarily involves operating a street sweeper and/or dump truck, including vehicles with both automatic and manual transmissions, during night operation hours from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM. The role requires servicing the equipment, making minor repairs and adjustments as necessary, and maintaining accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip sheets.

A Class B CDL is required for this position. Additionally, candidates must be able to obtain a tanker (N) endorsement within three months of hire. The work schedule includes nights, holidays, and weekends.

Duties also involve operating both heavy and light equipment for snow removal, assisting with special events, and handling other emergency tasks as needed, which may also require night and weekend work.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required, along with one to three years of related experience and/or training in the assigned trades area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Examples of Duties

SUMMARY

Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment

Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street/construction repair

Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment

When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators

Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal

Operates truck, including automatic and manual transmission

Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment

May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment

Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets

Performs major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems

Repairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks

Performs work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings.

Performs some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders; and tuning motors

Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding

Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed

May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.

May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings

Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.

Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.

Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.

Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.

Follows established safety procedures.

May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties

Maintenance Tech II (Sign Shop)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Discuss job requirements and receive detailed instructions from the supervisor
  • Inspects sign and marking installations in progress to ensure conformance with current MUTCD standards
  • Requisitions of necessary equipment and materials in daily operation
  • Maintains accurate shop daily operation log sheets and checklists using the VueWorks system
  • Sets up work zones as needed to ensure according to the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  • Installs and repairs traffic signs and pavement markings throughout the City
  • Assists crew with laying down hot applied thermoplastic
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains street painting such as double yellow and skips
  • Assists the sign fabricator with making signs
  • Sets up work zones as needed according to the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  • Assists the shop supervisor during emergency events and works with police, fire/EMS, and other governmental functions
  • Participates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations
  • Any other task above and beyond as deemed necessary by the Sign Shop Supervisor
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with Hazardous Material and tank endorsement. May require Playground Inspection Certification to be acquired after hire. May require journey-level licensure in an area of skilled trades.
