NATURE OF WORK

This is manual work involving limited skills in various maintenance and construction tasks throughout the City.

Employee performs work of heavy manual nature in a variety of construction and maintenance work , which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill; however, as work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Work is usually closely supervised and the employee receives specific work instructions at the beginning of each new job; however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. Work frequently includes the performance of heavy lifting and other strenuous tasks. Work is performed under the immediate direction of the supervisor and/or other delegated authority.

Examples of Duties

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
  • Prepares roadway restorations and Utility cuts for Installation of Hot Mix Asphalts.
  • Operates power saws, tampers, compactors grinders, and other equipment used in and roadside maintenance.
  • Loads and unloads lime rock, dirt, shell, sand, cement, concrete ready mix timbers, reinforcing steel, and other construction materials.
  • Collects, rakes, and loads debris from job sites on a daily basis and installs sod occasionally.
  • Manually Rakes, levels, and lutes hot mix Asphalts in repair of streets, patches pot holes with hot asphalt; places lime rock in lifts and compacts for roadway restorations and along road shoulders, may operate small roller or assist with Asphalt paver.
  • Assists in digging grade and setting forms for concrete work; wheels dirt, sand, concrete, and other materials; tamps, levels and finishes concrete.
  • Assists in the removal and replacement of new or damaged signs , sign posts and or guardrail
  • Assists in Grinding of concrete sidewalks and installing epoxies or caulking joints; cleans catch basins.
  • Operates, cleans and maintains small equipment utilized for roadside maintenance.
  • Occasionally drives automotive vehicles and construction equipment to and from job sites and assists with preventive field maintenance consisting of oiling and lubrication of equipment.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor, and occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and works efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and City officials.
  • Performs related work as required.
Requirements

EDUCATION
  • Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma
  • PROOF OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Six (6) months of satisfactory performance and permanent status as a Maintenance Worker I or Field Maintenance Worker with the City of Sunrise
OR
  • One (1) year of fulltime work experience in Public Works maintenance or repair functions, in one of the following areas - streets, grounds or stormwater.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher with an acceptable driving record. (Will be required to maintain license as condition of employment in this position)
  • Must obtain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher prior to hire. (Will be required to maintain license as condition of employment in this position)
  • Ability to operate truck with hydraulic lift, small tractors, skid steers, small rollers, power tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor
  • Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment
  • Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions: varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions.
Sensory
  • The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
Physical
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools.
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor, often under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

City-Paid Medical Benefits:
  • Group Health Insurance: The City pays for 100% of the cost for single coverage for
full-time employees and 66.66% of cost for Dependent/Family Coverage. Upon retirement and separation from City employment, employee receives a monthly stipend of $350 per month, applicable toward retiree health coverage.

Retirement:
  • Employee Contribution = 8%
  • Vesting = 10 Years
  • Normal Retirement Benefit = 2.5% of pensionable earnings for each year of
creditable service
  • Average Final Compensation (AFC) = 3 best consecutive earning years
  • Maximum Benefit = 80% of AFC, not to exceed $80,000.
  • Normal Retirement = Age 62 and ten (10) years of creditable service
  • Early Retirement = Age 57 and ten (10) years of creditable service, 3% annual reduction for each year prior to normal retirement age
  • 13th check based on monthly retirement, payable if the pension plan funding status is
equal to or greater than 100%. Paid in December each year following retirement
  • Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP) = 4 years/48 months maximum
  • DROP Interest Rate = 4%, compounded annually
