Manager Core Lab

Job Summary:

The Core Lab Manager is responsible for supporting Core Lab programs by ensuring day to day functioning of labs and events within the department. This position is also responsible for managing and maintaining lab inventory, and conducting research data analysis while maximizing the education experience of all students and visitors through instruction and demonstration.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Assists with day to day activities in the Core Lab.
2. Establishes the physical set up for lab activities ensuring maximum efficiency for students and clients
3. Maintains an organized, clean and sanitized lab.
4. Monitors security of core materials and keeps equipment operational.
5. Greets all visitors and assists with meetings held at the Core Lab.
6. Monitors and maintains safety at the Core lab.
7. Maintains an inventory of core samples and other samples on both a TCU computer and a common drive (to provide redundancy).
8. Maintains lab equipment associated with the Core lab as well as provides training to students, faculty, and other users of this equipment.
9. Pulls core samples from inventory for use by students, faculty, and industry users.
10. Assists students and faculty in analysis of core samples as needed.
11. Communicates with students, faculty and industry users regarding scheduling.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Geological Sciences and 2 years of lab experience or
• Master's Degree in Geological Sciences

Preferred Education & Experience:

• Experience organizing and handling core materials and familiarity with lab equipment.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• None

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

• Radiation safety training; forklift safety training.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques associated with rocks and core.
• Knowledge of sedimentary rocks (sandstones, shales and limestones)
• Knowledge of software operation and minor programming used to catalog core samples.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing about geological rock materials.
• Ability to contribute to scientific papers and grant proposals for core lab equipment.

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.

• This role is on-campus and in-person.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
