Position Overview:

As the Manager, Global Research and Development (R&D) Engineering, you will lead the Innovation R&D Engineering team, reporting to the Director, Innovation. You will contribute to the success of Ball by directly leading and managing strategic, complex, and cross-functional global innovation projects contributing to Ball's Global innovation strategy.

Your Key Areas of Responsibilities Include:

  • Engineering Team Leader/People Leader/Grower:
    • Provide direct leadership and supervision over a team of Engineers ensuring project work from the Global Product Research & Development (R&D)team is completed on time and to a high level of quality.
    • Demonstrate leadership via high level project management skills and the ability to make and help others make data-based quick, definitive decisions.
    • Lead Engineering team to think systematically in order to identify, support, and at times lead the research/project/trial effort.
    • Use and advocate for analytical and statistical evaluation tools such as: DOE, FMEA, Cost analysis, Statistical relevance, C2Q control limits among others.
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel
    • Lead 1-3 high-profile strategic and R&D projects from inception and analysis to operational implementation.
    • Where required, write AFE's with detailed scopes, accurate cost estimates, and clear, thorough communication of the project goals and justification.
    • Manage, review, provide feedback and lead the group to achieve their collective goals. Work directly with Engineer team and immediate Director to establish goals and assist them in planning and achieving.
  • Collaborative Cross-Functional Leader:
    • With R&D leadership to execute against project priorities and ensure smooth workflow between; Metal/Process/Non-Metal R&D, Design, and Pilot facility teams.
    • With regional/global functional leaders, finance, global beverage, sourcing, engineering, and IT to build out and manage the project timeline, funding, resources and deliverables.
  • Project Management Leadership:
    • Maintain the project status, project plan, timeline, milestones, meetings, meeting minutes, risks/issues and general project reporting .
    • Identify and manage program dependencies and critical path.
    • Executes project risk mitigations in anticipation of critical path impacts - manages & accelerates critical path timeline
  • Executive Communication:
    • Provide executive updates and facilitates steering committee meetings to drive prioritization, standardization and guide project trade-offs.
    • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations illustrating progress toward milestones and deliverables.
    • Define program success criteria and disseminates them to involved parties throughout program life cycle
    • Keeps project cost control updated by continuously reforecasting to ensure project aligns and is executed within defined funding (Operational and Capital).


Required Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree: 4 year technical degree in Engineering or related field or broad training in a related field usually acquired through college and/or equivalent work related experience.
  • 8 + years of job-related experience in technical/industrial management.
  • Manufacturing Project Management experience
    • Experience in executing large, global projects / programs.
    • Experience with vendor evaluation and selection processes.
    • Strong experience with project management practices and portfolio reporting.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
    • Culture champion, relates openly and works well with diverse groups.
    • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Problem Resolution & Analysis:
    • Statistical analysis principles.
    • Strong ability to overcome roadblocks by enabling others with clear communication, troubleshooting, and supporting others where needed.
    • Capable of making critical decisions under pressure.
    • Strong ability to multitask and troubleshoot in a non-linear manner.
  • Working Knowledge of:
    • Industrial manufacturing & heavy equipment, experience in analysis of technical concepts.
    • New product development tools; FMEA, Ideation, Solution Selection, Stage/phase gate, Process flow, etc.


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Advanced degree(s) (such as: MBA, MSc, etc.) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Strong familiarity with project & portfolio management software tools.
  • Experience with Continuous improvement processes such as Lean, Six Sigma.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Hybrid On-Site Work Environment: Based in Colorado, this position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three (3) or more days per work week (with core collaboration days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Travel ( up to 25%) and local commute between Ball locations and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
  • Hiring Salary Range: $93,100 - $142,140 (Salary to be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
  • This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
