Summary

Responsible to assist Director in the leadership, coordination and supervision of the specified unit(s). Primary duties include functional responsibility on a day to day basis. The Nurse Manager has financial accountability and in collaboration with the Director has the authority to hire and discipline. He/she will coordinate the activities of the charge nurses, nursing staff, and support staff. The Nurse Manager will plan, direct and evaluate total nursing care. Practices within the scope prescribed by the Nevada Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manages licensed and unlicensed staff in the assigned department, including, but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, lead meetings, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing workflow and patient throughput; performance appraisal, both formal and informal, rewarding, coaching and disciplining employees.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of patient care. Establishes, administers, and evaluates unit standards and departmental policies and procedures consistent with hospital policy and regulatory agencies, and monitors for compliance. Development and ongoing review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Gathers, assesses and takes appropriate action on information that relates to the HCAHPS with services provided through feedback surveys, customer complaints and community opinions. Addresses complaints and resolves issues effectively.
  • Creates a working/educational climate that provides growth and job satisfaction of personnel. Functions as staff educator/resource or preceptor when requested. Responsible for the coordination of orientation of staff members.
  • Arranges to have needed supplies and equipment on hand. Facilitates ordering and maintaining supplies assuring charges are allocated to the appropriate cost center. Monitors the supply budget. Facilitates equipment maintenance.
  • Participates in hospital safety programs. Monitors unsafe practices and reports events using occurrence report form and appropriate channels of communication.
  • Supports and enforces infection control policies and procedures.
  • Completes the unit operational and capital budget. Researching and preparing capital budget item requests.
  • Recognizes and effectively resolves conflicts, problem solves, and counsels staff at time of occurrence. Is familiar with employee contract and handbook.
  • Actively participates on designated hospital committees and/or may lead task forces as indicated.
  • Demonstrates support of the hospitals leadership by following the chain of command in resolving issues. Identifies and collaborates with the appropriate person or committee within the chain of responsibility for problem solving.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude toward change in the health care profession and remains flexible through these changes.
  • Understanding of emergency procedures; e.g. fire drills, evacuation procedures, emergency preparedness policies, etc. Verbalizes correct responses to such emergency situations. Performs correctly during such situations. Assures that all staff have understanding of same.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Registered Nurse with an unrestricted licensure in the State of Nevada
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as an acute care nurse and 3 years in a progressive leadership role
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for healthcare providers
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing from college/university
Preferred
  • Nationally recognized specialty certification within first six months from date of hire
