SCOPE:

Responsible for the efficient operation of multiple laboratory facilities. Ensures smooth running, efficient laboratories providing accurate, timely patient results. Ensures awareness of and compliance with all state and federal regulations regarding testing and safety. Develops and monitors all testing. Assures quality patient care is maintained through quality laboratory testing and results. Responsible for the structure, organization, daily, and long term operations of the laboratories. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Requires corrected vision, color perception and hearing to normal range. Requires legible handwriting.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires significant interaction with management, staff and external auditors and clients. Work will require frequent travel by air or automobile, approximately 70% of workweek, on average.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directs the performance of multiple laboratories through scheduling, work prioritization and supervision. Oversees all facets of laboratory testing and functions.
  • Acts as working technical supervisor for the laboratory. Performs routine tests as required and develops knowledge of more complex tests to perform as needed.
  • Supervises laboratory personnel. Evaluates qualifications of potential employees; interviews and hires; monitors and evaluates competency and performance of all personnel on an ongoing basis. Trains or assigns training of lab personnel. Provides for continuing education program and monitors employee participation. Schedules laboratory personnel.
  • Establishes and monitors quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing and routine maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and monitors policies and procedures for overall testing performance. Selects, evaluates, develops, and validates all test methods. Writes new test procedures and maintains a current procedure manual.
  • Establishes a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishes the parameter for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensures that these levels are maintained throughout the testing process.
  • Reviews patient test results, quality control, proficiency testing and maintenance records. Exercises professional judgment while ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory*s established performance specifications.
  • Maintains awareness of and compliance with state and federal regulations regarding laboratory operations and licensing.
  • Maintains awareness of and compliance with state and federal OSHA regulations and other safety regulations. Enforces safety standards. Maintains employee health records when mandated.
  • Orders supplies and equipment. Evaluates new equipment and reagents for technical suitability and cost effectiveness. Performs cost analysis on major equipment purchases. Analyzes true cost of providing individual tests and other laboratory services. Recommends pricing of tests and other services based on this analysis.
  • Monitors and evaluates laboratory testing reimbursement.
  • Interfaces with laboratory vendors and contractors to develop working relationships and cost effective pricing.
  • Maintains confidentially of all information related to patients and medical staff. -Performs laboratory budgeting and cost analysis.
  • Assists in budgeting, cost analysis, marketing, and managed care contracts for the practice.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of applicable labor laws.
  • Interfaces with other disciplines (i.e. nursing, clerical) to ensure a smoothly functioning and efficient operation.
  • Participates in practice strategic planning. Participates in practice committees as required.
  • Acts as a resource for laboratory related information to other disciplines.
  • Maintains laboratory-specific personnel file.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science field. Minimum seven years experience in laboratory testing, including at least five years in a supervisory capacity. ASCP or equivalent certification required. Current state licensure as required.
