Job Description

Smiths Interconnect is currently hiring for a Manufacturing Engineer at our Kansas City Missouri location. The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (AME) establishes a set of activities intended to produce new product within a manufacturing plant. They develop and assure confidence that the product will meet all quality requirements and bring "value add" to the enterprise and customer. This includes analysis, reviews, demonstration, testing, and metrics to assure systems and product are capable and in control. This position requires proactive leadership to drive lean methodologies and behaviors both in the plant and new product develop teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

The AME provides quantitative and qualitative reporting and actions to various functions and levels in the enterprise to assure goals are achieved and compliance to established Quality Management Systems. This will be accomplished by performing the following duties:
  • Participation in all Smiths Interconnect EHS programs, policies, procedures and training requirements
  • Participate in Design Review, DFMEA, DFM & PFMEA activities.
  • Experience working in multicounty and multisite environment with regional / global responsibility.
  • Lead & facilitate process improvement initiatives to address product and systemic issues
  • Establishes and assures programs met ISO9001, AS9100, ISO14001, OHSAS18001 and are completed to established schedule.
  • Establishes root cause and closed loop corrective action updates in various databases.
  • Translate customer specifications into manufacturing requirements.
  • Facilitate build and evaluation of functional and non-functional prototypes leveraging internal and external resources
  • Provide and assures customer advocacy by understanding customer requirements and assuring compliance through control plans.
  • Presents departmental performance to senior staff members.
  • Demonstrate and coordinate with various departments effective deployment of quality tools (8D, 5 Why, FMEA, Control Plans, 7 QC Tools)
  • Participates in Change Management Review (EN, EICN) Process requirements are fully identified and validated.
  • Review and participate in prototype builds.
  • Constructively contributes to Department functions - meetings, goals, training, etc.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Completes any additional assignments as requested by department supervisor

The Individual

  • BS Degree in Engineering or 5 to 8 years' experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must demonstrate sound knowledge and skill in quality body as knowledge
  • Certifications highly desirable: Green/Black Belt, CQE, CAQ
  • Write detailed reports and correspondence. Attention to detail and accuracy is required
  • Complex data analysis with good verbal, written presentation skills
  • Work with mathematical concepts as required for basic statistical quality tools (SPC, CPK, DOE)
  • Use tools such as callipers, micrometres, optical comparators...etc.
  • Reads work orders, test manuals, performance specifications, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints and engineering specifications to obtain product information such as specified material, surface, finish dimensions, testing procedures and equipment to be used
  • Calibration system requirements per ANSI/NCSL Z540-1
  • AS9100, ISO14001, ISO13485, ISO9001, PPAP and AQPQ highly desirable
  • Experience in new product development initiatives and design reviews (good understanding of manufacturing processes, molding, plating, tooling and/or screw machining is desirable)
