POSITION SUMMARY:

Fabricate and assemble structural forms in the production of ocean-going barges and related equipment while complying with company Health, Safety, and Environmental programs. Leading and direct others in the fabrication process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand, promote and adhere to a Safety-First culture by following safety guidelines and requirements at all times, understanding and properly utilizing the appropriate personal protective equipment for each situation
  • Set up and operate all types of welding equipment (i.e. sub arc, automated equipment, stick, flux core, manual and semi-automated) applying advanced knowledge of weld electrodes and wire, machine settings, quality and quantity standards, and the use of oxygen/acetylene gas torch for cutting and pre-heat
  • Consistently meet individual daily production goals as set by superintendents, supervisors and designated lead employees
  • Accurately interpret work specifications, work orders, blueprints, schematics, and other assembly documentation
  • Assemble product with speed and accuracy, applying advanced mechanical skills with minimal direction or supervision
  • Understand, perform, and effectively communicate the results of quality assurance and non-destructive testing procedures
  • Visually inspect completed welds to assure adherence to specifications and standards
  • Perform routine and minor maintenance on equipment, using advanced knowledge of the equipment and the processes to determine the appropriate timing and type of maintenance required. Communicate with maintenance and facilities when appropriate
  • Perform air arc gouging when removing welds or preparing weld joints
  • Pulling cable, hoses, or leads
  • Cleaning
  • Minor staging
  • Rigging
  • Mentoring and training of other trades people
  • Attend training classes such as confined space, forklift operation, crane operation, etc.

JOB SCOPE:

This position routinely works with minimal supervision taking instruction from specifications, work orders, blueprints, schematics, and other documentation.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position does not normally carry supervisory responsibility.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

This position works both independently and as part of a team. The ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with others within the team, in other parts of the organization, and within other closely aligned organizations is essential in this role.

SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:

  • Safely perform work in small and/or confined spaces, on ladders, and at heights of 20 feet or more
  • Recognize and resolve unsafe working conditions
  • Effectively communicate information and ideas in English both verbally and in writing without assistance or translation
  • Produce high quality welds using FCAW, SMAW, and Sub Arc welding processes and successfully pass x-ray quality 3G and 4G Full Pen Weld tests on 3/4" plate using FCAW 1/16" wire
  • Advanced mechanical skills sufficient to set up, trouble shoot and operate standard fabrication equipment
  • Show proficiency and become certified in the operations and control of equipment and systems, including Forklift Operation, Overhead Crane Operation, Hi-Lift Operation, and JLG Operation.
  • Conduct inspections of finished products to evaluate quality
  • Complete installation and fabrication to exceed published standards and/or project specifications
  • Perform math calculations (add, subtract, divide, multiply) and use mathematics-based logic to solve complex problems
  • Accurately use a tape measure and other measuring devices

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High-school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience welding, fitting, blueprint reading, overhead crane operation, etc. in a heavy manufacturing environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a wide variety of environments including heights of 20 feet or more, small and/or confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions. Will routinely bend, twist, kneel, walk, climb, and reach for 1-12 hours per day. Will sit, stand, and walk for 1-12 hours per day. Will endure noise, fumes, dust, and inclement weather. Must be able to lift and carry 1-60lbs throughout the day. Must be able to push or pull up to 75 lbs.
