Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Teach martial arts trainings at practices and competitive events.
  • Assume responsibility for building a nationally competitive martial arts team through successful recruiting and retention of high-level student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Trainers, Assistant Coaches, and Strength and Conditioning Coaches to design both academic year (in season and out-of-season) and summer conditioning programs.
  • Propose budgets, reconcile expenses, and propose purchases for sports program.
  • Operate program within the approved budget guidelines.
  • In conjunction with various units within the athletic department, participate in donor meetings and events, participate in public relations activities, and monitor both individual and team academic performance to ensure that academic requirements are met.
  • Serve as key liaison to the broader UC Martial Arts Program community, engaging in alumni, fund raising and other key stakeholder activities.
  • May work in youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Recognized expert in teaching and coaching and has minimum of 10 years of teaching or coaching experience.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to mentor and develop assistant coaching or program instructional staff.
  • Highly advanced and effective inter-personal, motivational, and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to maintain current rules and regulations of martial arts competition by the NGB or ISF.
  • Martial arts rank certification of minimum of 4th Dan or equivalent experience.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to the needs of clients.
Education/Training:
  • Certification to instruct in the applicable martial arts rank certification or equivalent experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Teaching or coaching Certification by NGB or ISF.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.00 - $32.00.
  • This is a 11%, part-time (4.4 hours per week), career position that is not eligible for UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
