Position Description

This position serves as the Material Distribution Driver - HazMat Endorsed for the Logistics division --a unit of Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions housed within Residential, Retail and Supply Chain Services. This position is responsible for utilizing the UCSD fleet of delivery vehicles (24' box truck, cargo van, step van, and other material movement equipment) to distribute packages, parcels, mail and equipment from the UCSD Warehouse (7835 Trade St) to various UCSD Campus facilities, including locations not physically located on the main campus.

The material distribution driver is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of all routes and handling/transporting hazardous materials with careful adherence to all government and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. This position will occasionally serve in backfill capacity with other warehouse units located at the Trade Street location, including but not limited to Surplus Sales & Moving Services with ability to cross train and support our Receiving unit, as needed. Incumbent serves in a front-line capacity in Receiving & Distribution for interactions with customers, vendors and attends meetings / events in relation to and as a voice within Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possesses a Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Drivers License (Class B) with Haz Mat Endorsement.
  • Experience operating distribution or utility vehicles, for example box trucks, cargo vans, step vans, and/or flat bed utility trucks.
  • Experience operating material handling equipment, for example: forklifts, pallet jacks and hand trucks.
  • Ability to operate truck, hydraulic life gate and securing devices in handling material.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely lift packages weighing up to 70 lbs. Ability to move large pieces of furniture / equipment.
  • Knowledge of hazardous goods and the regulations in transporting them on the roads. Certification in Hazardous Materials, in accordance with part 172, Subpart H of code of Federal Regulations title 49.
  • Demonstrated experience to safely operate a truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of over 26,001 lbs. (approximately 15 tons), forklift, pallet jacks and hand trucks adhering to safety procedures. OSHA forklift certification.
  • Ability to walk a cumulative of nine (9) or more miles per day while pushing carts of materials, or maneuvering equipment via manual and/or electric MHE.
  • Demonstrated skills in communicating clearly / effectively on the telephone and in person. Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain customer relationships through a professional approach in handling customer service needs and problems.
  • Ability to remain calm with angry or frustrated customers, instill confidence and constructively handle complaints. Skill in expressing oneself orally and in writing; able to communicate professionally with all customers, faculty, staff and student.
  • Ability to operate mobile / handheld technology devices, similar to a smart phone or tablet type device.
  • Skilled at organizing and prioritizing work to meet all deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently (minimal supervision).
  • Ability to maintain acceptable work habits, demeanor, attention to detail, punctuality and regularity of attendance.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team; collaborating with colleagues as described in Principles of Community.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must have a valid California Commercial Drivers License (Class B License) with HazMat Endorsement.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and subject to random testing during employment.
  • Demonstrated experience with material movement equipment and vehicles (forklift, pallet jacks, box trucks, cargo vans, step vans, and flat bed utility trucks)
  • Overtime and weekends may be required.
  • Job offer is contingent on clear Background Check.
  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to work mid-shift (10am - 6:30pm)
  • Pre-employment physical and TB test required.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $49,987 - $67,192 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.94 - $32.18

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
