POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Mechanics Helper

F.L.S.A. Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

Pass pre-employment physical and drug test

Acquire valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with P & S endorsements

Acquire valid Texas School Bus Driver Certification

Be available to work late hours as needed

Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts

Ability to bend, stoop, stand, kneel and squat

Drive bus routes as needed

Ability to diagnose, repair and rebuild gasoline or diesel engines

High school diploma or GED

Prefer prior mechanical experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Check district vehicle fluid levels on an assigned schedule.
  2. Assist shop mechanic in vehicle repairs as needed.
  3. Fuel school buses and other district vehicles.
  4. Wash school buses and other district vehicles.
  5. Perform pre-trip servicing and post-trip inspections for activity trip bues.
  6. Repair/replace school bus seat support system, foams and seat covers.
  7. Repair/replace broken glass, window frames,latches.
  8. Perform minor body repairs including but not limited to sanding, surface

preparation, masking and painting.
  1. Complete the required written documentation (repair orders, vehicle condition

reports, etc.) related to job

performance in this position.
  1. Perform preventive maintenance, inspections and tire repairs.
  2. Participate in assigned and ongoing shop and facility clean-up and preservation activities.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.
  4. Ability to use all standard equipment found in a motor vehicle repair shop.
  5. Ability to understand and use all new computer diagnostic equipment and emission standards.
  6. Be knowledgeable of parts and supplies.
  7. Must have basic knowledge of computers and software programs used in trouble-

shooting and repairs of engine control systems and testing of sensors.
  1. Ability to operate a school bus.
  2. Must be cooperative and show initiative towards improving skills.
  3. Ability to understand and execute verbal and written orders.
  4. Must be self-motivated in acquiring knowledge and performing Texas school bus

inspections correctly.
  1. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  2. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • Requires on a daily basis: Standing 5-7 hours, walking for 1-4 hours, forward bending or stooping1-3 hours, trunk rotation up to one hour, sitting or lying on back 1-3 hours, squatting or kneeling 1-3 hours, climbing or crawling up to one hour
  • Requires the use of senses: Vision, touch and hearing are used constantly
  • Requires the use of hands and feet as follows: Bilateral hand/arm use from 3-7 hours per day, reaching from floor to 60 inches above floor while standing, reaching forward up to 36 inches for tools or parts, unilateral arm use both left and right up to 30 inches from the body, use of feet for driving and road testing issues.
  • Requires the use of hand power tools weighing from 1-38 pounds, exertion of force by pushing or pulling on tools up to 80 pounds, occasional force on tools up to 145 pounds pulling on a ratchet, occasionally requires climbing and working on a ladder up to 12 feet off of the ground, occasionally requires working off of or standing on top of the roof of a school bus approximately 12 feet off the ground with an uneven surface.
  • Requires lifting and carrying as follows: Lifting, holding and using tools weighing up to 40 pounds, lifting and carrying parts up to 50 pounds up to 200 feet, lifting with assistance parts weighing up to 220 pounds.
  • Requires pushing and pulling as follows: Pushing and pulling open bus hoods approximately 70 pounds of force, pulling or pushing carts and wheels requiring approximately 100 pounds of force, pushing and pulling wrenches requiring up to 145 pounds of force.
  • Requires work in environments where exposure to: Vibration from the use of power tools, noise, artificial light, ambient (outdoor) temperatures that vary from extremely hot to very cold, dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, diesel fuel and chemical solvents.
  • Operates school district vehicle daily: May get in and out 10 to 20 times.
  • Any other reasonable request of the Director of Transportation or their designee.
