TITLE: Mechanic Helper

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school graduate or
  2. Valid Alabama Driver's License.
  3. State school bus mechanic
  4. Commercial Driver's

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

JOB GOAL:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assists a skilled mechanic with the repair and maintenance of various vehicle units and assem-blies such as transmissions, brakes, and clutches. May be required to travel to site of vehicle break down and assist with roadside repairs.
  2. Independently performs routine maintenance work such as changing oil and filters, replacing gaskets, checking and replacing hoses, checking and replacing fluids, lubrication, etc.
  3. Performs upholstery work. Recovers seats, replaces mats.
  4. Repairs and/or replaces automotive glass such as windshields, mirrors, turns signals, etc.
  5. Assists with tune-ups and mirror adjustments.
  6. Performs periodic and annual inspections following prescribed inspection requirements. Reports malfunctions and other inspection deficiencies to Assistant Foreman (Inspection) or General Foreman.
  7. Performs other routine duties around the shop as required, such as changing tires, washing ve-hicles, clean-up, and picking up parts.
  8. Learns and complies with safety rules and procedures.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  10. Maintains, repairs and reconditions vehicular equipment (brakes, front and rear ends and ignition systems).
  11. Relines brakes, replacing kingpins, bushing and springs
  12. Install exhaust systems.
  13. Services electrical wiring systems and replace components.
  14. Demonstrates general mechanical knowledge.
  15. Demonstrates growth in ability to troubleshoot problems.
  16. Operates bus and wrecker.
  17. Does minor body repair and painting.
  18. Demonstrates knowledge of automotive parts.
  19. Welds
  20. Assumes responsibility for acting as a representative of the Sumter County Board of Education in the solution of problems which might affect your specific assignment.
  21. Assumes responsibility to perform any work which is assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and/or his representative, including the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month term. Salary to be established by the Board.

SUPERVISION: Works under the immediate supervision of an Assistant Foreman or skilled mechanic. Some work is performed with direct supervision; however; all work is checked for completeness and compliance with departmental rules.
