Summary

The purpose of this position is to coordinate, supervises, monitor and direct activities of staff performing vehicle and facility maintenance work for the Transit Maintenance Division. Oversees maintenance and repair of heavy duty transit buses and various light and heavy vehicles and equipment; building and facility maintenance; and assists in transit procurement activities related to Maintenance and facilities.

The selected candidate will supervise the current 4am-12:30pm shift

Essential Functions
  • Organizes, coordinates, oversees and monitors the work of staff engaged in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and hybrid powered vehicles and equipment; interior and exterior cleaning of buses; facility and building maintenance and repair, Assigns work activities, evaluates work products, and meets with staff to identify and resolve problems
  • Oversees the preparation of work orders; assigns, prioritizes and schedules repairs;. Assists in ordering of parts, materials and supplies and prepares cost estimates, monitors expenditures
  • Assists department and division management with developing standards and goals, establishing plans and priorities, and applying policies and practices to ensure that adequate staffing is available, service objectives are achieved, and operating expenses are contained. Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff. Prepares employee performance evaluations and provides coaching and counseling. Completes quality control checks on repairs and PMI's on a regular basis. Monitors Technician repair orders for efficiency, and follows up with technicians.
  • Maintains accurate supporting documentation for vehicle and facility maintenance programs. Oversees the preparation of work orders, PMI checklists, and FTA compliance documentation. Assists parts team, ordering parts, materials and supplies. Prepares cost estimates, monitors expenditures.
  • Prepares and maintains various records and reports, correspondence, bulletins, technical guides and other informational materials. Ensures that department vehicles are in compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and other regulatory programs. Enforces safety regulations and trains employees on safety procedures and applicable work hazards.
  • Receives and responds to difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints. Coordinates and oversees the investigation and resolution of complaints.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. Will be required to work on a stand-by basis.

Supervision Exercised

Exercises supervision over assigned staff, making detailed work assignments, reviewing work in progress and upon completion. Coordinates the work of outside consultants and contractors as assigned

Physical Demands

The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and strength. Physical demands include standing, reaching, kneeling, climbing, bending and walking.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily indoors in an office and maintenance shop environment. The incumbent is required to perform work around moving objects, vibrations, slippery surfaces, noise, dirt, dust, chemicals, odors, oil and fuels including diesel, gasoline and liquefied natural gas.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge Of

  • General facilities maintenance, repair and maintenance materials, tools and procedures. Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to personnel processes Computerized systems for personnel and maintenance records
  • Effective supervisory and training techniques.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalency or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties, technical experience in a related field is required.

An Associate's degree from an accredited institution or technical trade school in automotive/diesel technology, electronics, engineering or a closely related field is preferred

Experience

Three years of recent paid and progressively responsible work experience in maintenance operations involving the cleaning, maintenance and repair of buses and various light and heavy vehicles and equipment, and facilities maintenance related work.; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Certifications

Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B CDL with P (Passenger Endorsement) or the ability to readily obtain one. ASE Transit Series certification preferred.

This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing
