Pay Range

$31.88 - $39.57 Hourly for the 533.1 level

$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 533.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We're looking for an entry to mid-level Mechanical Technician/Technologist to work as a part of a team to provide basic to moderately complex technical support to a variety of Laboratory missions. Tasks include but are not limited to: equipment set up, operations, general troubleshooting, and maintenance; minor design, mechanical fabrication/modification, and basic data collection/analysis. This work will involve being trained/certified to work with radioactive and other hazardous materials. Some overtime and occasional travel may be required to meet program goals. The position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
  • Provide basic technical support applying basic knowledge to staff working under close supervision.
  • Participate in general on-the-job training mechanical operations and equipment training.
  • Apply basic knowledge of mechanical equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Perform basic mechanical equipment and system testing.
  • Collect data using fundamental knowledge mechanical testing methods.
  • Follow written/verbal operational and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory environment.
  • Perform all assignments per ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.2 level
  • Provide general technical support applying intermediate knowledge working under general supervision.
  • Perform moderately complex mechanical fabrication, equipment operations, maintenance, system testing and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Provide general mechanical fabrication/modification in support of mechanical projects.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Associate degree in engineering, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience; or a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical fabrication technologies and processes.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical repair, maintenance, and processes.
  • Basic understanding of machine shop equipment use i.e. saws, mills, lathes, drill press, and grinders.
  • Basic skills using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift ≤30 lbs., and work in a team environment to solve challenges.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical documentation.
  • Experience with personal computers and software (Microsoft Office) with effective written and verbal communication skills.

Additional qualifications at the 533.2 level
  • Intermediate understanding of mechanical fabrication technologies and processes.
  • Intermediate skills and experience working with hand/power tools and mechanical shop equipment i.e. saws, mills, lathes, drill press, and grinders.
  • Experience with mechanical equipment operations, maintenance, and/or troubleshooting.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience with hardware fabrication/repair processes and equipment maintenance.
  • Experience working with hazardous materials.
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) programs i.e. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CREO.
