What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you interested in working on multiple facets of design, fabrication, and mechanical testing? Do you see yourself working in an environment where you are constantly learning new skills? If so, this position is for you!

We are seeking a Mechanical Technologist (Early/Mid-Career) to support research activities led by Scientists and Engineers. These activities would involve the design, construction, testing, and operation of systems and technologies used to synthesize, characterize, and evaluate the properties of materials. These systems may include aspects such as low- and high-pressure environments, mechanical and electrical apparatuses, sensors and controls, and data acquisition. Work will consist of providing laboratory support for focused, full-time projects of limited duration or multiple concurrent projects that compose the candidate's full schedule.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Design, fabricate, and assemble mechanical components or assemblies
  • Design and draft detailed drawings for fabrication
  • Perform materials characterization experiments, including developing procedures, analyzing results, and preparing reports on test results and conclusions
  • Maintain laboratory equipment such as MTS/INSTRON load frames
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation
  • Interface with people outside the department, such as machine shop staff and external vendors

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$71,800 - $138,200

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Associates degree in an engineering or science discipline (e.g. mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science) OR equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Bachelors degree in an engineering or science discipline (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science) OR equivalent education and work experience
  • Experience with installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining equipment and systems
  • Basic mechanical and electrical design and troubleshooting skills
  • Basic machining skills (e.g. experience with lathes, milling machines, EDMs)
  • Understanding of instrumentation (e.g. thermocouples, strain gauges)
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with data analysis and computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting (e.g. experience with SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently as well as within a team environment

About Our Team

The Mechanics of Materials Department performs experimental and analytical studies to characterize and predict the thermal-mechanical behavior of materials, from atoms to continuum, specializing in fracture and failure. Our experimental work covers the spectrum of discovery to characterization to model validation. Motivated by observations, we develop mathematical models to simulate material responses under various loading and environmental conditions. The fidelity of our models and simulations varies from atomic to continuum scales. We develop numerical methodologies so that our material models can be implemented in high-performance computing simulations. Our experimental capabilities include characterizing materials over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates, developing micro- and nanoscale strain and displacement diagnostics, and testing subsystems to support model validations.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
