What You Will Do

J-2 is seeking several experienced Mechanical or Structural Engineers, to be filled at a R&D Engineer Level 3 or Level 4, to provide technical support related to Vessel Confinement Systems and other impulsively loaded structures that support the national Subcritical Experiments and Stockpile Stewardship Programs. In this role, the selected individuals will develop the skills necessary to specialize in designing, analyzing, and fielding impulsively loaded structures and their components. These positions will interface with customers, programs, and project teams from across the Laboratory, and throughout the DOE Complex, to understand and help define objectives necessary to enable world class science. Primary responsibilities of these positions relate to the performance of engineering tasks (i.e., requirements definition, design, analysis, fabrication and inspection oversight, assembly, staging, testing, and documentation) as required throughout experiment lifecycles. Additionally, these individuals will be expected to provide mentorship for their colleagues as J-2 expands its technical capabilities. Successful candidates will be expected to perform independently or as a lead engineer as circumstances dictate. These engineers will support the J-2 SCE Team Lead and will help champion formality in engineering, safety in design, security, and compliance with established process and procedure while delivering rigorous solutions for our customers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

Engineering

Thorough knowledge and experience in mechanical/structural engineering including experience in project scoping, design, fabrication, inspection, and developing engineering specifications. Strong experience developing engineering solutions that conform to consensus code standards such as ASME, ASCE, ACI, etc.

Design

Working knowledge and experience in design drafting practices, geometric tolerance, and development of engineering specifications. CAD experience with design packages such as CREO or Solid Works.

Communication Skills

Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with various technical backgrounds. Demonstrated experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others. Demonstrated experience successfully supporting multiple projects with competing priorities.

R&D Engineer 4 ($146,800 - $254,700)

In addition to the requirements of R&D Engineer 3, the candidate will demonstrate the following capabilities :

Engineering

Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in engineering design and working knowledge of the scientific method. Advanced knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects. Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience in developing and implementing technical requirements, specifications, plans, reports, and procedures. Experience in use, interpretation, and application of consensus standards (e. g. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3, API 579 Fitness for Service code, AWS Welding Code, etc.) as they apply to novel design solutions.

Leadership

Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor a variety of multi-disciplined team efforts to completion while effectively interacting/communicating with all levels of personnel; developing and nurturing effective customer and stakeholder relationships; building trust, negotiating, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts. Knowledge of Project Management skills and tools including Scheduling, Earn Value and Risk Mitigation strategies.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Strong consideration will be given to candidates that can demonstrate implementation of engineering design, analysis, and testing (or some combination thereof) of statically and dynamically loaded structures, systems, and components (small, medium, and large scale).
  • Working knowledge of DOE and LANL Institutional Safety Management Programs (e.g., Integrated Work Management, High Explosives Safety, Hoisting and Rigging, Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Engineering Research and Development, Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Configuration Management, Quality Assurance, etc.).
  • Record of contributing to or authoring engineering and/or scientific reports and publications .
  • Presentation of authored papers at a nationally recognized conference or proceeding.

Education/Experience R&D Engineer 3 : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience R&D Engineer 4 : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico with occasional travel to Nevada.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
