Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under administrative and technical direction and supervision, with latitude for independent action and decision, initiates and completes work assignments in the Instrumentation and Inhalation Therapy Service or a medical equipment repair unit. Serves as an integral team member in planning, establishing, implementing and directing health care setting medical equipment inventory, control, distribution, preventive maintenance, repair and spare part services for a center, borough or city-wide program; performs related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Plans and operates a spare part center based on evaluative surveys of equipment. Selects and distributes types and amounts of parts needed for medical equipment repair, including identification and standardization of parts. Sets-up guidelines regarding life expectancy of parts, anticipated usage and the ability of available repair technician personnel to install and replace parts. Diagnoses and corrects system and equipment malfunctions and ensures appropriate personnel are kept informed of technical updates and equipment-related problems.
2. Makes recommendations regarding inventory, usage, interchangeability, wear and repairability of spare parts.
3. Conducts examination, inspection, research and analysis of equipment with engineers and reviews technical documentation, manufacturer's service manuals, specifications, drawings and other available literature.
4. Develops and prepares repair part listing and procurement procedures per health care setting, borough and city; provides item description and technical data.
5. Recommends and implements, as to quantity and quality, methods of supply management for selected parts and stock levels to be established and maintained.
6. Assists in the evaluation and procurement of parts and serves as a consultant and advisor for pertinent information regarding spare parts and equipment operation, repair, use, storage, care, maintenance, etc., for repair technician staff and health care setting staff (e.g., doctors, nurses). Maintains optimum safety standards of equipment use for health care setting staff and patients.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, preferably including one (1) year in electronic equipment repair, shop, general science, physics and completion of a course in electronic equipment repair and medical equipment repair in vocational, associate degree, trade or armed service school; and
2. Five (5) years of satisfactory, full-time, paid experience as a Medical Equipment Repair Technician for installation, repair and preventive maintenance of medical equipment, three (3) years of which must have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity; or
3. Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Biomedical Technology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology or related discipline; and
4. Three (3) years of experience servicing a broad-range of clinical/patient care equipment, devices, and network medical systems in a hospital or health care facility; or
5. Three (3) years of satisfactory, full-time, paid experience as a Medical Equipment Specialist or equivalent type of experience; or
6. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
