Job Summary: The Medical Lab Services Manager assists with oversight and daily operations of the University Medical Center Lab under the guidance of the Director. Manages accurate and efficient delivery of medical lab services to patients, providers, faculty, and staff.
Additional Department Summary: Assists with oversight and daily operations of the University Medical Center Lab under the guidance of the Director of UMC Medical Lab Services. Manages accurate and efficient delivery of medical lab services to patients, providers, faculty, and staff. Collaborates with physicians to collect, process, analyze, and interpret lab results. Supervises staff and delegates duties when the Director is unavailable. Provides guidance and training to build an efficient and effective medical lab team, and promotes a strong culture of integrity and responsibility. Assists in training of new staff and periodic employee performance evaluations.

Establishes and maintains extensive quality control and quality assurance protocols for all medical lab services. Manages all aspects of laboratory information systems. Oversees medical lab equipment procurement maintenance and inventory; performs calibrations and/or performance checks as needed. Maintains inventory logs, generates reports, and assists with routine audit functions as needed. Reviews monthly billing statements from various agencies for accuracy and resolve outstanding issues. Serves as liaison to various UA partners and other CCHS departments, including clinical departments and enterprise departments such as Finance, Health IT, etc. Maintains strictest confidentiality. Adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of medical laboratory experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of medical laboratory experience. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certified.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Two (2) years of laboratory management experience, to include staff hiring, supervision, evaluation, and development, supply ordering, equipment purchasing and evaluation, inventory management, and/or budget management. Experience with medical lab billing and reimbursement in an outpatient environment, including CPT, ICD10, and medical necessity rules.

Must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) personnel standards for a technical consultant in a moderate complexity lab, and CLIA personnel standards as a technical supervisor of multiple disciplines in a high complexity lab, with a preference for microbiology credentials.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to monitor quality control standards. Experience with hematology procedures, microbiology procedures, chemistry, urinalysis, serology. Knowledge of regulatory and licensure requirements. Familiarity with a large ambulatory clinic with multiple providers operating as a multi-specialty group practice in a teaching environment. Ability to manage relationships with service vendors and outside reference labs.

Ability to present information clearly and professionally throughout the patient care process. Ability to research and prepare comprehensive reports. Knowledge/experience with electronic health record systems and laboratory information systems. Proficiency in the use of standard computer application software. Experience with MS Access, MS Excel to include working knowledge of data transfer between both applications.

Excellent organizational and effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to cope with stressful conditions. Ability to demonstrate tact, versatility, and adaptability. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and directional initiative. Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making. Ability to maintain strict confidentially of protected health information and follow HIPAA regulations at all times.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related field. Experience working in multiple areas of a medical lab. Strong background microbiology and hematology.
