UPMC St. Margaret is looking for Regular Full-Time Medical Laboratory Scientists or Medical Laboratory Technicians to join their team and help support the Microbiology/Automated Testing Lab on evening shift!

Responsibilities:
  • Customer Interaction: Professionally interact with all laboratory customers and respond to inquiries courteously and promptly.
  • Policy Adherence: Follow all laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Specimen Handling: Collect and process specimens, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Testing Procedures: Perform qualitative and quantitative tests with precision and accuracy, recognizing and addressing critical or abnormal results.
  • Problem Solving: Identify and resolve issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, or results.
  • Data Entry: Accurately enter patient information and test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Testing Competency: Independently perform moderately complex or waived tests; perform high complexity tests under supervision.
  • Quality Control: Perform and document quality control checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Supply Management: Monitor and maintain lab supplies, using materials cost-effectively.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain patient confidentiality and follow compliance guidelines.
  • Training: Assist in training and orienting new employees, students, and residents.


Qualifications:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist:
    • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program,
    • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification,
    • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory,
    • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing.
    • Prefer 1-year experience in a hospital or outpatient laboratory.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician:
    • Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA),
    • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent certification,
    • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
    • Experience in a hospital or outpatient laboratory preferred.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
