General Summary of Position
The individual assumes general responsibility for the administrative and technical functions of section designated within the Laboratory. This person is also responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervision: Supervises, coordinates and participates in the daily work in the Clinical Laboratory. Develops standard operating procedures for new tests or procedures and implements new tests and systems. se.
  • Continually evaluates effectiveness of SOP's. Reviews daily workload and quality control, follows up on any quality or timeliness variances as needed. Functions as a technical resource for staff technologists in the area of experti
  • Assists with selection of new instruments or equipment. Ensures all testing and processes adhere to CLIA, CAP, OSHA, FDA, and AABB regulations as indicated for each technical area of supervision. Responsible for all aspects of inventory control in given laboratory section.
  • Monitors the effective and efficient use of supplies, identifying cost savings opportunities when possible. Facilitates staff attending meetings and other hospital activities. Is able to respond appropriately in emergent situations that may arise in the laboratory environment.
  • Management of Staff: Supervises direct reports in each Laboratory section. Participates in the interview process and facilitates staff involvement or peer interviews. New employees training. Actively participates in the planning, organizing, and completion of sectionspecific laboratory orientation and technical training..
  • Responsible for annual competency assessment of direct reports. Ensures staff compliance with all hospital mandatory training and education
  • Prepares timely personnel evaluations for all direct reports. Applies personnel policies in a consistent, fair and equitable manner. Coaches and counsels employees when indicated. Helps to identify and develop the learning needs of staff.
  • Develops annual personal goals and reviews progress towards goal achievement on a quarterly basis. Assists with development of shift schedules, ensuring a consistent workload distribution that is fair and meet established productivity standards. Participate in and holds staff accountable for journey policy and process and behavior standards.
  • Technical Skills and Problem Solving: Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Evaluates specimens for suitability for testing and resolves problems related to specimen collection. Performs testing, records results of tests and ensures that results are accurate.
  • Reports results for stats, abnormal results, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy. Proficient in instrument operation and advanced troubleshooting for designated section of the laboratory. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) as indicated
  • Evaluates laboratory results and correlates data to recognize disease states. Monitors test results for reasonableness. Investigates and resolves technical, instrument, and other variances leading to problems with or unexpected test results
  • . Exercises initiative and independent judgment in dealing with a broad scope of procedural and technical problems. Is able to communicate effectively with physicians regarding specific test results. Able to prioritize and organize workload so that results are reported within established turn-aroundtimes.
  • Quality Assurance and Maintenance: Oversees quality assurance and instrument maintenance procedures and maintains related records according to established policies/procedures.
  • Performs, verifies accuracy of results, and records both QC function checks and quality control testing within the specified time frame. Oversees all quality control records. Recognizes instrument malfunction and takes actions to resolve problem.
  • Records corrective action taken. Ensures that daily and scheduled maintenance and function checks on instruments/equipment occur and that documentation of these actions is acceptable. Performs calibration and linearity checks according to established procedures.
  • Oversees all CAP proficiency testing, submits proficiency testing results to CAP, reviews CAP survey analysis, taking any corrective action as indicated. Completes annual departmental competencies within specified time frame. Assists with performance improvement initiatives.
  • Development: Maintains current knowledge and certification. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (License, PPD, Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.)
  • Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments. Directs and/or maintains awareness of changes in procedures or protocols. Attends department meetings as required.
  • Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.
  • Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • Associate's degree as a Medical Technologist required or
    • Bachelor's degree as a Medical Technologist required

    Experience
    • 3-4 years Experience in clinical lab required
    • 1-2 years Leadership experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications
    • ASCP (MT or MLT) Registry required or
    • equivalent required and
    • CLS or AMT acceptable required and
    • Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) preferred for Blood Bank Supervisor only preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
    • Moderate Computer skills to perform Data entry and specimen verification.
    • Software: Computerized laboratory information systems, Clinicians View, Microsoft Word, Excel
    • HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
