Job Duties

The Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) Physician provides high quality individualized medical care and basic psychiatric care to SWVMHI patients, in conjunction with the facility staff. The MOD serves as a medical resource to the Institute during non-regular weekday hours.

This position is hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits.

Requires comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in the diagnoses and treatment of general medical illnesses; basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry; ability to provide leadership to treatment teams; ability to communicate effectively with, and work collaboratively with, medical/psychiatric colleagues and members of other disciplines in the provision of patient care. Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in the diagnoses and treatment of general medical illnesses; basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry; ability to provide leadership to treatment teams; ability to communicate effectively with, and work collaboratively with, medical/psychiatric colleagues and members of other disciplines in the provision of patient care. Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

Additional Considerations

Licensed to practice medicine as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia and current DEA certificate.
Board Certification through AANP.
Completion of psychiatric orientation by the Medical Director, or equivalent experience.
Current CPR, BLS and/or ACLS certification.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Certification is strongly considered.

These positions are hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
