Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY :

Reviews reports on diseases and surgery and codes in accordance with acceptable classifications; prepares statistical reports; maintains indexes and related files.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED :

Under the direction of department manager or other designated authority.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED :

May coordinate work of lower-classified clerical staff.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED :

Typewriter, CRT terminal and other standard office machines.

TYPICAL DUTIES :
  1. Reviews reports on diseases and surgery from in-house patient files and/or from other hospitals; according to recognized classification systems, codes and indexes diseases, surgery, treatments and final diagnosis.
  2. Prepares code sheets for computer processing; maintains computerized indexes according to established procedures.
  3. Locates and retrieves missing information required for discharge coding; receives requests for medical information, providing assistance or routing to appropriate department or person.
  4. Prepares statistical reports; coordinates the distribution to appropriate personnel.
  5. Maintains related files, such as indexes, logs, charts, etc.; coordinates the work of lower-classified clerical staff as required.


QUALIFICATIONS :
  • 2 years of post High School courses with emphasis in Data Processing or Medical Terminology, accreditation as Medical Record Technician
  • 1-2 years related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Pay Range: $ 16.92 - $ 23.69 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
