Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a generalist in a clinical laboratory
• Computer skills to include: Windows, Microsoft office, electronic medical record (EMR) and laboratory information systems (LIS), interfaced equipment and reference laboratory reporting
• Some experience with insurance relationship to laboratory testing

Position Summary

The Medical Technologist independently performs waived, moderate, and high complexity diagnostic clinical laboratory tests. The Medical Technologist provides accurate and timely results and reports which influence critical decisions made by clinicians. The Medical Technologist assists clinicians in appropriate utilization of laboratory services and interpretation of results. The Medical Technologist may supervise other Technologists and Phlebotomists and perform administrative duties as assigned by, or in the absence of, Assistant Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Clinical Laboratory skills appropriate to perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing.
  • Understanding of age and population specific needs of UHC student patients and providers.
  • Competence in laboratory skills measured by: 1) direct observations of routine patient test performance 2) monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, 3) review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records 4) direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks 5) assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples and 6) evaluation of problem-solving skills.

  • Sit, stand, or remain on feet for 50 minutes consecutively, 8 hours per shift.

Laboratory Testing (analytical):
  • Independently and accurately completes procedures as outlined in laboratory procedure manual, within standard turnaround times in assigned area and other areas, as needed.
  • Provides technical leadership in designated area(s).
  • Operates various types of laboratory analyzers and equipment.
  • Interprets patient test results correctly for age of patient population.
  • Collaborates with other technologists when unusual clinical specimens or test results present. Verifies abnormal results as specified by test procedures when necessary.
  • Identifies and investigates possible causes of abnormal or unusual test results.
  • Demonstrates consistent work performance during stressful situations.
  • Prioritizes processes.

Result Reporting (post-analytical):
  • Assumes responsibility for laboratory data and information through use of electronic systems and/or written and verbal reports.
  • Notifies providers of critical values and documents such notification.
  • Uses features and functions of laboratory information systems (LIS), the electronic health record (EHR) and interfaced systems with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoots information and interface system and corrects problems.
  • Ensures that work logs and reports are accurate and timely.

Consultation/Processing (preanalytical):
  • Judges the appropriateness of test orders or availability of testing.
  • Recommends appropriate tests when applicable.
  • Instructs patients in specimen collection. Performs blood collection using various techniques as needed.
  • Accurately identifies patient/labels using 2 identifiers and processes specimens using standard precautions and assuring specimen integrity.

  • Performs and documents quality assurance activities that include quality control data, accurate proficiency testing, equipment maintenance and system troubleshooting using manuals and/or technical service assistance.
