Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:

Under direct supervision, the Medical Waste Technician as a member of the Waste Management Team is responsible to collect, transport, store, treat, destroy, monitor and dispose of waste discarded within the facility. Assists in clean ups and specialized waste handling to include, but not limited to Special Pathogens and "Category A" waste, chemicals and radioactive monitoring as required.

Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the proper handling and disposing of all H+H/Bellevue facility discards.
- Monitors, operates and sustains the equipment used for the treatment and disposal of all waste and special medical waste including but not limited to compactor, incinerator, neutralizer and autoclave.
- Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance as scheduled.
- Collects trash from designated locations and transports to the Waste Management Center/Compactor area.
- Inspects waste accumulation containers to determine the bins are not leaking.
- Inspects points of waste generation in laboratories and satellite storage areas prior to special medical waste pick-ups to prepare and label waste containers.
- Collect, segregates and packages special medical waste containers, hazardous chemicals and radioactive wastes.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and
2. Successful completion of required Federal, State and/or Local trainings related to regulated medical waste including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and/or US Department of Transportation (DOT) prior to commencing duties or satisfactory proof of prior successful completion of such trainings; and
3. Must demonstrate the ability to operate medical waste treatment or treatment/destruction mechanism including but not limited to autoclave/compacter, incinerator, chemical sterilizer/pulverizer, microwave unit and radiation detection devices.
