Summary

Under the direction of the Department Manager and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assists patients in the psychiatric, chemical dependency, and geriatric programs. Responsible for for ensuring the security, safety, and well-being of staff, patients, visitors, and properties. This is accomplished through actively patrolling, identifying security issues, and correcting deficiencies.

Responsibilities

o Assists in nursing care for mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, cognitively impaired and/or those patients seeking treatment for chemical dependency o Assists patients in bathing, dressing, and grooming as needed. Encourages patients to maintain personal hygiene and keep living and group areas clean and orderly o Performs routine procedures per RN instructions such as collecting urine specimens, providing ice and heat packs, and assisting RN's with basic procedures (i.e. wound care, turning patients for physical exam, etc.) o Orients patients to the hospital routine and environment. Encourages patient participation in our programs o Observes patients to protect from wandering, self-harm, and harming of others. Documents Q 15 minute checks, performs line of sight observation, and 1 to 1 observation. o Documents and reports abnormal observations in behavior or physical condition to the RN and care team as necessary o Feeds patients or encourages them to eat. Documents and reports percentages of meals consumed o Escort patients to offsite medical, dental, or other approved appointments o Take and record patients vital signs and report abnormal findings to the RN's o Works effectively as a team member to provide efficient and therapeutic care for our patients o Is familiar with basic medical, psychiatric, and chemical dependency terminology o Responsible for accurate data entry when admitting and assigning patient rooms and patient types o Responsible for organizing and training staff on hospital policies and procedures. Reports to management on individual staff members progress in fulfilling their assigned duties o Promote crime prevention and utilize proactive techniques to reduce crime, theft and loss of Carson Tahoe Health property. o Uses resources to respond to incidents, including emergencies and code gray violent events. o Will be required to administer patient restraints when authorization is provided by an approved medical practitioner. o Positively interact with Carson City Sheriff's Department, Nevada Department of Corrections, and other county, state, federal and out of state law enforcement agencies to build and continue a positive working relationship. o Maintains security and access systems. o Verifies identity of visitors and escorts to and from secure locations. o Completes required paperwork, such as inventories, check-sheets, and reports. o Communicate important security and safety information and incidents to next shift. o Patrol premises to secure property and personnel. Monitors surveillance equipment to assure security of premises. o Conduct audits of alarms, locks and security equipment. o Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Required o High school diploma or equivalent o Three (3) years experience as a Mental Health Technician, Certified Nursing Assitant/Caregiver in Behavioral Health or Long Term Care Setting, or in Corrections or Military; OR Bachelor's Degree in Mental Health related field or current Nursing School student. o Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certified, through the Sheriff's Department, within one (1) year of hire o Two (2) years experience in security, healthcare de-escalation or related field o Within six (6) months of hire, completes the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Course o American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) / Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for healthcare providers. • Preferred o Bachelor's Degree in Mental Health related field o Security and/or healthcare experience with high acuity level psychiatric patients o Certified instructor in nationally recognized courses related to de-escalation of patients (i.e. CPI-Non Violent Crisis Intervention)
