The Metro Boston Mental Health Units of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital are seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Mental Health Worker. The ideal candidate will be a compassionate, skilled caregiver, to aid in the recovery of persons treated within our inpatient psychiatric setting. Our Mental Health Workers ensure dignity and respect with our patients through interactions that affirm the individual's needs and preferences and by optimally integrating their perspective into all facets of care.
Please Note: This is a full-time (40h/week) Evening shift position with alternating weekends off. Shift Hours: 2:45pm - 11:15pm. Days off: Week 1: Monday/Saturday; Week 2: Sunday/ Thursday.
Employees in this position will be required to perform "mandatory overtime"

At the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, we take pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other healthcare settings. The DMH units within the Hospital provide inpatient psychiatric services to adults with serious mental illness to enhance autonomy, safety, and return to the community.
Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team, led by attending psychiatrists which also includes psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, occupational therapists, and rehabilitative staff specializing in vocational, recreational, and expressive therapies. A variety of treatment modalities are used, including psychopharmacologic, psychotherapeutic (individual, group, and family), psycho-educational, behavioral, cognitive, and milieu therapies.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing direct care service to the mentally ill, emotionally or physically handicapped, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in psychology, human services, mental health or retardation may be substituted for the required experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all-inclusive):
- Provides direct care services to patients on the skills of daily living.
- Determines the need for supplies used in assisting and instructing patients in feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, cleaning and clothing maintenance, oral and physical hygiene, and self-preservation to ensure the daily needs, dignity, and human rights of the patients are met.
- Assists with taking and reporting vital signs.
- Establishes a rapport with all patients; and practices the principles of Safety, Hope, and Healing. Delivering trauma-informed care, utilizing de-escalation techniques and the patients' Individual Crisis Plans.
- Provides 15-minute checks and 1:1 or constant observation as ordered.
- Acts as a member of an interdisciplinary team associated with the daily care of our patient/client population.
- Responds efficiently and effectively to emergencies.
- Assists in the evaluation of direct care staff.
- Ensures adequate staff coverage.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrates ability to follow written and oral instructions by gathering information through observing and questioning individuals.
- Talent for communicating effectively in oral expression, writing clearly and concisely, and developing ideas in a logical sequence.
- Ability to perform basic mathematics.
- Skilled in interacting with people who are under emotional stress with the ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations.
- Capacity to work in a team setting and group situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness, substance abuse, and/or who have experienced homelessness.
- Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
