Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Critical Care Fellowship Program

A national leader in health care and life sciences, CU Anschutz is the only comprehensive academic health sciences center in Colorado and the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. Located in Aurora, Colorado, it is one of the newest education, research, and patient care facilities in the world. With six schools and colleges, CU Anschutz trains the health sciences workforce of the future by blending education, research and clinical care all in one place. This strategic collaboration among diverse healthcare fields allows knowledge to travel directly from the research bench to the patient's bedside.

The Advanced Practice Provider Critical Care Fellowship is dedicated to training and recruiting advanced practice providers (APPs) to successfully integrate into a career in critical care, while improving the life of every patient.

The program is designed for both Physician Assistants and Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioners who are interested in a career in critical care medicine. The fellowship is ideal for new graduates who wish to pursue a career in critical care or practicing APPs who wish to change their career focus. The goal of the fellowship is to help APPs smoothly transition into a career in critical care medicine.

Medical Critical Care Track

The APP medical critical care track will be hiring 2 fellows (acute care nurse practitioners and/or physicians assistants) seeking advanced training and a career in critical care medicine with a focus on medical critical care. The focus of the fellowship will be to foster strong critical care NPs and PAs through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary 12-month training program. The medical critical care track, in collaboration with the surgical critical care fellowship program, will combine didactic education and clinical experiences based in the University of Colorado Hospital Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) with rotations in other ICUs across the hospital.

All rotations will occur at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The medical critical care track will be housed in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine.

Program Details

Over the course of 12-months, fundamentals of education will include a comprehensive orientation, biweekly didactic education, simulation labs, skills labs and a range of rotational experiences based on the track of interest.

APP fellows will have the opportunity to engage in quality improvement and research opportunities with the support from UCHealth and University of Colorado Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and staff. Fellows are encouraged to participate in national and local conferences. Furthermore, with the help of assigned mentors, they are encouraged to present research and poster presentations.

Following graduation from fellowship, APP Fellows should be able to practice at a high level of autonomy and in parallel with standard of care in medical intensive care units.

Clinical Curriculum

During the course of the 12-month clinical year, APP Fellows will work alongside faculty APPs, attending physicians, fellows, medical residents, and other healthcare disciplines. Duties and experiences of the APP Fellows will include obtaining an accurate history and physical examination, presenting a concise history of presenting illness, writing orders, reviewing patient records, developing a differential diagnosis for a host of common critical care conditions, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, performing a variety of procedures, and effectively communicating with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.

The fellows will be given graduated autonomy based on meeting clinical milestones.

Rotation Goals and Objectives

Rotation goals and objectives are based on the specific rotation and will be provided to each of the fellows at the start of their rotation. Rotations for the medical critical care track include MICU, Neuro ICU, Cardiac ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Surgical Trauma ICU, and Burn ICU along with electives in specialties such as nephrology, pulmonary hypertension, cardiology, infectious disease, endocrinology, and palliative care. Advisors will be identified at each of these specific rotations and will provide feedback and evaluations of fellows.

Day and night shifts are to be expected over the course of the year.
