DESCRIPTION

The University of California Health Milk Bank was established to help support neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and families in the region and the state. They do this by providing safe, pasteurized human milk that has been donated by breastfeeding parents. The University of California Health Milk Bank, operated by UC San Diego Health, is the second in California to be accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. It is the only milk bank in the nation that is part of a health care system.

This position is for our new University of California Health Milk Bank that opened in the Spring of 2020. Our goals are to help mothers breastfeed, to improve breast milk donation and to ensure that all premature or ill babies in our region have access to donor milk. Learn more by clicking Here

Under general supervision, the Milk Bank Technician is responsible for performing specific tasks related to the receipt and transportation of raw milk; preparation, pasteurization, and dispensing of donor human milk to be supplied to hospitals, families, and other non-profit milk banks; and performing other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current Food handler Education Certification or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to properly identify, prioritize, and handle all supply inventory in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform frequent cleaning/sanitizing of work area and equipment, use personal protective equipment properly, learn sterile technique, and maintain a high level of quality control in day to day tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize specialized equipment.
  • Proficient computer skills necessary for effective data recording.
  • Excellent attention to detail, deadlines, accuracy, and organization.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous experience as a milk tech, formula room preparation, surgical tech, lab tech or med-tech.
  • Knowledge of Human Milk Banking Association of North America standards.
  • Knowledge of shipping requirements and handling of hazardous materials (dry ice).
  • One (1) year of previous experience with the receiving, storage, processing, pasteurization, and/or shipping of biologic materials.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • On the job training of Good Manufacturing Practices set forth by the FDA, HMBANA (Human Milk Banking Association of North America) guidelines, CDPH requirements, Dry Ice Handling, and department specific Food Safety Plans and Policies.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $64,999 - $80,868 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.13 - $38.73

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
