ABOUT THE JOB

As a milk technician you will assist the NICU with preparation of donor milk, human milk, and formula. Fill human milk, donor milk, and formula feeding orders for patients in the NICU.

Prepares a variety of duties related to the daily operations of Human Milk/feeding room. These include:
  • Checking in donor milk and mothers breastmilk into our electronic milk system
  • Maintain adequate inventory or supplies to meet patient needs for milk preparation.
  • Maintain sanitation and cleaning in the milk preparation room.
  • Fill human milk and and/or donor milk feeding orders for patients- this can include specialized recipes that require attention to detail for accuracy, thawing and freezing milk, adding fortification to milk and drawing up a set volume for each infant.
  • Removes damaged formula cans and outdated formula stock from inventory and disposes per facility guidelines.
  • Uses correct technique to measure solids and liquids.
  • Communicates with supervisor, patient care areas and RN's regarding problems with feeding orders, human milk/formula storage, or administration.
  • Transcribes feeding order information to prepared feeding labels.
  • Covers, labels, and dates formula requiring refrigeration.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for accurate quantities of expressed human milk and fortifiers to be used for preparation, inventory, billing and tracking.

Assists in training other employees in feeding preparation and proper handling techniques as needed.

Complete mandatory education outlined in the Milk Room Policy.

Perform other duties as delegated by nursing staff and unit management as needed in both routine and emergent situations.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Assist nursing staff /ancillary staff in the transfer of patients from bed to bed, stretcher or wheelchair, pickup and delivery of patient meal trays and assisting with patient feeding as directed. Demonstrate the ability to organize workload and manage multiple tasks while maintaining a clutter free and orderly environment including prompt answering of unit telephones and accurate delivery of messages and information to patients, families, visitors, staff and personnel upon request. Educate and train new staff members in the responsibilities of the Care Team Associate role. Perform other duties as delegated by nursing staff and unit management as needed in both routine and emergent situations. Perform patient position changes, placement and removal of patient equipment, daily hygiene care, simple non-sterile dressing changes, finger stick glucose checks, may perform venipuncture to obtain a blood sample, maintain quality control checks and delivers/retrieves lab specimens and supplies as requested. Responsible for accurate and timely entry of information into computerized bed-management system. Responsible for prompt response to patient call lights and addressing patient needs using positive guest relations skills while ensuring patient vital signs, intake, output, height and weight are obtained and documented as directed. May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One of the following:

--Completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing course within 180 days; or

--Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA); or

--Experience with direct patient care such as a medical assistant, nursing assistant, emergency medical technician (EMT), or surgical technician in the past three (3) years; or

--Completion within the last three (3) years, or will complete within 180 days, an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program; or

--Nursing licensure candidate who was unsuccessful on the state licensure examinations in the past three (3) years; or

--Completion a nursing program outside the United States and is awaiting the licensure examination in this country.

Completion of an above qualifications pathway, including patient care experience or a supervised clinical log, within 180 days as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
