Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for supervising a minimum of two technical staff and providing project management and oversight of technically and regulatorily complex mine permitting and abatement activities for uranium and potash mines, ensuring that activities associated with the sites are protective of human health and the environment.

How does it get done?

- Review and coordinate all NMED responses to the New Mexico Mining Act permit applications
- Provide administrative and technical supervision through writing and reviewing complex technical documents
- Oversee project management of environmental investigations and remediation
- Supervise a minimum of two technical staff
- Be accountable for ensuring that Mining Act work is performed in accordance with overall management objectives
- Coordinate between water resource professionals in numerous federal and state agencies
- Conduct interviews and hiring actions in accordance with State Personnel Office (SPO) and Human Resources (HR) guidelines
- Supply testimony at hearings before the Water Quality Control Commission and the New Mexico Mining Commission
- Advise Senior Staff at NMED
- Perform public outreach

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Providing water resources regulatory and project management oversight, as it relates to operation, reclamation, and remediation of mine facilities with complex site-specific groundwater issues
- Supervising water resources technical staff
- Performing critical reviews technical water resources documents
- Coordinating between water resource professionals in numerous federal and state agencies

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a related Water Resources discipline (Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Biology, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management or Engineering) and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required.
