Job Title -- Foreign Language Teacher

Supervisor: Principal

Job Goals:
  • To motivate each student to develop competencies, knowledge, and skills in comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing a foreign language.
  • To interpret to students the culture of the countries where foreign language is spoken
  • To discover and develop students' special talents in foreign language communication.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate.
  3. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  4. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  5. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  6. Oral and written fluency in English and assigned language(s) for instruction.
  7. Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the foreign language program of instruction.
  8. Ability to solve problems as a productive team member.
  9. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  10. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  11. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Establishes a positive classroom climate and effectively manages foreign language instruction within that environment.
  3. Provides quality foreign language learning experiences for students.
  4. Plans lessons in concert with the established curriculum.
  5. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students.
  6. Utilizes innovative teaching techniques and technology as a teaching tool to plan and provide instruction; acts as a facilitator for students in the use of technology in the classroom.
  7. Evaluates student progress in terms of the objectives of the course and grades taught.
  8. Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
  9. Teaches skills and knowledge in foreign language to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  10. Provides learning experiences which develop the basic communication skills, utilizing recordings, media, and other digital/electronic equipment as appropriate.
  11. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  12. Develops pupil understanding and appreciation of culture of countries where the studied language is spoken.
  13. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  14. Evaluates and reports each student's progress in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing the foreign language in relationship to the level being taught.
  15. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records in accordance with school system financial procedures.
  16. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress as needed.
  17. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping solve student health, attitude, and learning problems.
  18. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the system and in self-selected professional growth activities, such as foreign language workshops.
  19. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy and state and federal rules and laws.
  20. Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  21. Attends local, state, and national staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge.
  22. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  23. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  24. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  25. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  26. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  27. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  28. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
