UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Motility/Endoscopy Technician to support the GI Lab!

This position consists of four 10-hour shifts per week from 7 am to 5:30 pm, and also involves weekend call.

The person in this position carries out a variety of non-endoscopic clinical and research studies for adolescent/adult/geriatric patients including, but not limited to, motility studies, ambulatory pH monitoring and wireless pH studies. Assists the nursing staff by performing specific adolescent/adult/geriatric patient care. Cares for and maintains all endoscopic equipment and instruments used in the G.I. Laboratory.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform care activities for patient safety as per procedure guidelines under the direction of the professional nurse.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Actively participate in the GI Labs staff meetings.
  • Provide physician interpreted studies with comprehensive clinical information on each patient so that an accurate diagnosis can be established.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly before use.
  • Assist physicians with therapeutic procedures as per procedure guidelines under the direction of the professional nurse and/or physician.
  • Correctly set up procedure room with appropriate endoscope/equipment and instruments.
  • Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot problems or mechanical failure of equipment and notifies Clinical Coordinator or Equipment Coordinator.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new techniques.
  • Never keep patients waiting without explanation.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain ongoing equipment service log.
  • Assist in recording, collating, and analyzing data obtained during clinical and investigative studies.
  • Clean procedure rooms/travel carts after each case per proper guidelines.
  • Attend/read relevant departmental in-service programs.
  • Perform motility studies, ambulatory pH monitoring and wireless pH studies as per procedure guidelines.
  • Handle all interactions with patients and families in courteous and caring manner.
  • Maintain, clean and disinfect motility equipment according to policy.
  • Care for and maintain all endoscopic equipment utilized in the G.I. Laboratory.
  • Obtain specimens, properly label, log specimens appropriately and deliver specimens to appropriate area as necessary.
  • Place maximum effort on ensuring the patient experience in the GI Lab is extremely positive.
  • Protect patient privacy.
  • Perform leak tests and carefully inspect all equipment prior to disinfecting/sterilization.
  • Handle questions and issues in a friendly and efficient manner.
  • Collect and collate data per established protocols.
  • Properly clean and disinfect or sterilize equipment/instruments according to policy.
  • Accurately maintain all required logs [i.e. endoscope/scope reprocessor logs, gluteraldehyde changes, quality control checks for appropriate concentration of gluteraldehyde, water filter changes, daily maintenance of ultrasonic cleaner and reprocessor exposure log, refrigerator temperature, eyewash station log and CLO incubator log (PUH campus only) etc.].
  • When necessary, transport patients to and from the GI lab in a safe manner.
  • Know and comply with fire, safety and emergency plans.
  • Assume assigned duties in emergency situations.
  • Participate in unit-based performance Improvement.
  • Provide backup to Equipment Reprocessors to maintain fiber optic endoscopic instruments and accessory equipment utilized in the GI Laboratory when staffing levels and/or volume indicates.
  • Contribute to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Assist in the identification of safety hazards and reports appropriately.
  • Keep hallways free of equipment.
  • Contribute to an efficient work and team environment.
  • Attend mandatory in-service programs.
  • Participate in self-review as requested by department manager.
  • Return unused supplies or reusable equipment to proper storage place.
  • Distribute clean linen to appropriate areas and keeps covered at all times.
  • Maintain own body safety by complying with established policies/procedures.
  • Evaluate and edit, as appropriate, all data generated from computerized and non-computerized equipment.
  • Comply with all established policies/procedures of the GI Lab and the hospital.
  • Notify Clinical Coordinator or Equipment Coordinator of any damage to equipment
  • Provide education to patient prior to commencing procedure.
  • Transport GI travel carts as necessary.
  • Maintain supply inventory and re-order supplies when necessary. Rotate dated supplies and restock procedure rooms.
  • Assume responsibility for own development.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous employment or training as an Endoscopy Technician, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Motility Technician preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer keyboard and software preferred.
