The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging is seeking a full-time Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Research Technologist. The incumbent is responsible for performing technical and administrative work of MRI operations for clinical trial research participants as well as for preclinical/translational studies utilizing the equipment within the medical imaging internal service provider core. The MRI Research Technologist performs routine to complex diagnostic and technical procedures under the direction of a medical imaging researcher. The incumbent conducts MRI scans and monitors the quality and accuracy of MRI images.

The incumbent in this position serves as a key member of the research team focused on high impact imaging-based research. This research group focuses on the design and implementation of the next generational tools for medical imaging to improve the quality of patient care.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Operate a magnetic resonance (MR) scanner to obtain images for use by medical imaging physicians and researchers while following established guidelines and MRI Protocols.
  • Insert, monitor, and/or remove a peripheral intravenous catheter for IV support related to MRI.
  • Operate DXA equipment and perform DXA scans on patients.
  • Ensure that quality assurance checks and scheduled maintenance on medical imaging ISP MRI scanners, DXA scanners and on other equipment are performed and documented.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures involved in the operation of radiology equipment.
  • Knowledge of the human anatomy and proper positioning of the patient to perform imaging as prescribed.
  • Knowledge of procedures employed with radiation hazards, materials, safety data sheets and their application.
  • Ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, physicians, technologists, support personnel, and other staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people in a wide variety of professional levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient-related information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems and to work accurately with attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage large volumes of information while having the ability to be flexible and adjust to changing situations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows Office.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree in a healthcare or related field with an appropriate health-related Virginia license.
Experience: At least 3 years of magnetic resonance (MR) experience.
Licensure: American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) with emphasis in MR

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
