Job Description Summary
Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs diagnostic imaging procedures using sophisticated radiation-detecting instrumentation. Prepares and administers radioactive chemical compounds known as radiopharmaceuticals. Knowledgeable in IV placement to avoid extravasations of radiopharmaceuticals. Performs computer processing and image enhancement. Provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation. Provides excellent patient care. Demonstrates excellent customer service.

Job Description
  • Perform routine and non-routine in-vivo nuclear imaging and counting procedures using all MUH nuclear instrumentation. Can rotate through all areas in the Department and demonstrates competencies in selected procedures and psychomotor skills.
  • Determine appropriateness of requested procedure, acquire approval of nuclear physician and properly acquire radiopharmaceutical for that procedure. No inappropriate procedure accomplished on any patient.
  • Administer and/or assist in administration of radiopharmaceutical or ancillary drugs to patients. No misadministration’s of any radio-pharmaceutical. Extravasation of doses or poor tagging techniques (for cardiac or GI Bleed) limited to 6 times or less. Provide proper documentation of occurrences
  • Computer operation including start-up, study acquisition, storage and manipulation of data processing of planar and tomographic studies. Performs on-call duties as required.
  • Collaborate with staff in regard to continuing education. Adheres to all MUSC and departmental policies and procedures


Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and non-verbal communication from patients’ diverse stages of development.
  • Completes procedures following approved procedure protocols with sufficient speed to promote departmental efficiency.
  • Completes required documentation for each procedure, both computer and handwritten.
  • Demonstrates technical competence in the operation of imaging equipment, and the use of procedure related supplies. Complete knowledge of related physics, anatomy, imaging techniques and medical terminology.
  • Introduces self to patients, explains the procedure, assists the patient at the end of the procedure and explains the next steps.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor in attitude, appearance, and communication.
  • Obtains pertinent history, verifies orders, and communicates effectively with co-workers and other clinic staff to provide excellent patient care.


Additional Job Description

Minimum Training and Education:Must be a certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) or Registered Technologist. Should have acquired skills from CAHEA approved program and preferably one- or two-year’s experience in a similar position.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:Must be a certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) or Registered Technologist (RT or certification). Licensure from the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association is required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
