GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

The MGH Cancer Center Protocol Office Research Nurse Manager (CCPO RNM) is accountable for the facilitation of excellence in patient care when executing clinical research protocols. The CCPO RNM will oversee daily operations and supervision of the Research Nurse Coordinators (RNC) within designated disease/treatment programs to ensure safe execution of protocols, optimal team functioning and equitable distribution of workload. The CCPO RNM will collaborate with CCPO and Cancer Center leadership as well as research staff in identification of current and future service needs of the programs. Support will be provided by the CCPO Nursing Director and a designated CCPO Administrative Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects, and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

The responsibilities of the CCPO Research Nurse Manager include but are not limited to the following:

Program Responsibilities:

1) Develop and maintain a staffing model to ensure equitable workload distribution and cross coverage among RNC. Oversight of daily operations and staffing among Research Nurse Coordinators (RNC)

2) Assist in decision making and problem solving related to patient care coordination while maintaining protocol integrity.

3) Work with leadership to identify current and future service needs of the CCPO and of the individual disease/treatment programs. Share responsibility for meeting these needs.

4) Collaborate with CCPO Nurse Director, Nurse Practice Specialists and CCPO leadership to establish consistent expectations and standards of practice:

a. In patient care including, but not limited to, documentation, patient screening, education, assessment, and phone triage.

b. In reviewing and operationalizing protocols including, but not limited to protocol feasibility, standardization of flowsheets, and order verification.

5) Assist the Nurse Practice Specialists with coordination of orientation and education of new RNC staff.

6) Interface with providers, Principal Investigators, Clinical Research Managers and Staff to promote optimal patient care and execution of protocols.

7) Review and follow up on Safety Reports and/or complaints in collaboration with CCPO Nurse Director, CCPO Nurse Practice Specialists and CCPO Administrative Director. Provide education and feedback to team members, when necessary, support development of corrective action plans and participates in root cause analysis when appropriate.

8) Monitor compliance with policies and procedures.

9) Applies knowledge of current and relevant issues and changes in Research nursing, social and medical science to improve patient care, protocol implementation and foster staff development.

Personnel Management:

1) Manages/provides direction to RNC staff including conflict management to ensure adherence to standards of practice, respectful and efficient teamwork, and job satisfaction.

2) Participates in the hiring of new RNC staff in collaboration with the CCPO Nurse Director.

3) Address all RNC staffing needs for the assigned disease programs to ensure safe staffing for vacations, planned days off, sick calls, personal emergencies and LOAs.

4) Provides opportunities for staff to participate in committees and projects impacting research.

5) Participates in regularly scheduled disease group management meetings to share status of the disease/treatment research program and problem solve workflow and personnel concerns.

6) Conducts annual performance appraisals for RNC staff.

7) Implements corrective action according to hospital policy as needed with support of Nurse Director and/or Administrative Director.

8) Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among all members of the research team through effective communications and negotiations.

Operations Management/Administration & Busine

1) Supports and participates in departmental and institutional committees including MGH Nursing, CCPO and Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center Committees.

2) Participates in planning current and long-term projects to improve the implementation of clinical trials in the MGH Cancer Center.

3) Proactively seeks and acts upon patient, families and staff feedback and initiates appropriate action.

4) Accountable for implementing hospital, departmental, research and IRB regulatory standards.

Professional Development

1) Identifies learning needs and goals and designs a plan to meet them.

2) Maintains required research nurse training.

3) Participates in MGH Leadership and development opportunities as available.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable): List the number of FTEs supervised.

Responsible for supervision approximately 20-25 RNC FTE

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable): Indicate financial "scope" information, i.e.: size of budget, volume, revenue, etc.; Indicate total physician/non-physician FTE scope.

The Research Nurse Manager is responsible for participating in the annual budget process with the CCPO Nursing Director, CCPO Administrative Director and works closely with the CCPO Leadership on personnel management and resource allocation.

Qualifications

  • 1) Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusett

    2) Certification in Oncology Nursing (OCN) or Research Nursing preferred

    EDUCATION: Specify minimum education and clearly indicate if preferred or required

    BSN required.

    EXPERIENCE: Specify minimum creditable years of experience and clearly indicate if preferred or required

    Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse

    Minimum of 5 Years relevant nursing experience and 3 years relevant research experience preferred

    Previous resource/management experience preferred
