Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Directs the day-to-day operations of Perioperative Services, including Same Day Surgery, PACU, the Operating Rooms, the Procedure Room, Central Sterile Processing, and Endoscopy. Accountable for the provision of quality patient care, compliance with hospital policies and accrediting and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties:

  • Directs the day-to-day activities in area of responsibility. Works with Anesthesia and the Surgeons to board surgical cases, assure department is adequately staffed, equipment is prepared, and rooms are turned over in a timely manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for coordinating and assuring adequate staffing coverage in a safe and cost-effective manner. Develops and oversees the daily staff and call schedule.
  • Manages recruitment, selection, retention, staffing and scheduling, and KRONOS in assigned department(s). Duties include hiring, training, counseling, evaluating staff performance, and when necessary, disciplining and/or discharging staff.
  • Works with the executive leader to develop and administer the departmental budget and assure productivity and expenditures are within budget.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates departmental objectives, policies, procedures and standards; revises work systems and procedures as necessary to improve the efficiency and productivity.
  • Assures departmental compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards and hospital policies; initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Works cooperatively and maintains communication with other departments and external parties to facilitate quality patient care, resolve problems and exchange information. Investigates and resolves issues and concerns regarding area of responsibility. Accepts organizational accountability for services provided.
  • Empowers staff to participate in decision-making. Supports and models evidence-based practice and innovation.
  • Evaluates quality, outcomes, and appropriateness of care delivery for assigned area(s).
  • Identifies and seeks professional learning opportunities. Provides and/or supports opportunities for learning for staff in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Incorporates systems for patient safety in work and care processes including National Patient Safety Goals and Universal Protocol.
  • Uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses and Interpretive Statements to guide departmental and personal practice.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies and procedures and compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

General Requirements

• Valid State of Michigan RN License • ACLS and BCLS certification

Work Experience

• Minimum of four years of related nursing leadership experience.

Education

• Bachelors' Degree in Nursing

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated leadership skills • Knowledge of nursing theory and standards of practice • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of nursing care including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates • Effective oral and written communication skills • Ability to handle problem situations in a tactful, courteous and respectful manner • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, health care professionals, and others in the exchange of information • Demonstrated supervisory skills to effectively manage the daily operations and administration of assigned function(s) • Analytical ability to develop departmental policies, procedures and work systems • Mental ability to adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands, deal with the concerns of staff/patients/families, resolve problem situations in a positive manner, and respond to emergency situations • Physical ability to assist in providing patient care
