This position supports Tulane University research projects including clinical trials within variety of therapeutic areas. The Research nurse practitioner (NP) provides medical evaluation and care to patients enrolled in research studies in collaboration with the principal investigator. Training will be provided to develop the necessary skills required of a research NP in the conduct of clinical trials. The Research NP is required to have an in-depth knowledge of protocol requirements and good clinical practices as set forth by federal regulations. The NP works closely with the Research Coordinators as a liaison between the patient, investigator, Institutional Review Board and sponsor in carrying out the responsibilities of the protocol. The NP may independently conduct screening, enrollment and follow-up of study participants, ensuring protocol compliance and close patient monitoring as protocol and research training permits. The NP provides direct patient care for clinical trial participants. The NP supports and performs data and source documentation, adverse event reporting and maintenance of complete regulatory files.

The Position of Research NP requires excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. The NP shall have demonstrated aptitude in patient care and multi-disciplinary teamwork, demonstrate strong organizational skills, and a strong desire for research capability.
• Knowledge of current medical and nursing care techniques, principles, and practices to perform clinical evaluation and medical management of patients.
• Knowledge and ability to obtain and document comprehensive accurate assessments, health histories, and physical examinations and decisions and subsequently plan care in accordance with assessments.

• Ability to work collaboratively with the entire research team including physician(s) and other staff to carry out and implement Research Protocols in a precise and ethical manner.

• Ability to quickly attain knowledge of relevant ethical and legal aspects of providing care to patients in a research environment. 

• Ability to quickly attain knowledge of the research process, the importance of adherence to protocols, and the accuracy needed in collection and documentation of research data.

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with strong interpersonal communication skills. This includes the ability to perform computer-based work on a regular basis.

• Ability to function independently and recognize when consultation is appropriate.

• Ability to interpret physical findings and refer or treat/manage the research participant as the condition and protocol dictates.

• Ability to work effectively with individuals or groups in providing health education.

• Ability to work collaboratively with community and sponsoring agencies.

• Ability and willingness to work nontraditional hours as requested or required.

• Completion of an ANA-approved Nurse Practitioner program with national certification.
• Louisiana licensure to practice professional nursing plus recognition or licensure by the State Board of Nursing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the date of hire.

• Experience and knowledge of clinical trials, research methodologies and regulatory requirements.
• Experience working with research study participants and community members and groups.
• Experience with electronic health records systems and general computer experience.
