Summary:
The Physician's Assistant (PA)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) will function in a supervised or independent capacity with the Surgical Services health team. Supervision, where necessary, will be provided by an on-duty physician.

The NP/PA of Cardiovascular Surgery demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.


Responsibilities:
Take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries, suture wounds
Assist Physician with hospital inpatient and outpatient surgeries in preparation and conduct of surgical procedures under direct supervision
Perform hospital H&P's, discharge summaries and subsequent care
Perform minor procedures under general supervision of physician
Assist other midlevel providers and physicians in the provision of general medical care to our clients
Prescribes or dispenses medication within the scope of licensure
Initiates and orders appropriate diagnostic testing
Assists in surgery fulfilling requirements of a surgical assistant
Provides pre & post-op surgical/medical care
Provides medical education and health promotion/disease prevention education
Participate in "on-call" as determined by department needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Education/Licensure/Certification:
Graduate from an accredited institution
Certification as a Physician's Assistant/Nurse Practitioner
Current license to practice in the State of Michigan
Continuing medical education as required by the certification body
ACLS and BLS
One year experience in Cardiovasuclar service line - preferred

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Ability to maintain a professional, courteous and compassionate approach to patients and staff
Experience in: surgical/technical procedures including but not limited to: administration of therapeutic injections, central venous and arterial access, digital and local anesthesia, wound care, dressing changes, Venipuncture/arteriopuncture
Electrocardiogram recordings
Nasogastric intubation
Endoscopic vein harvesting
CPR
