Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Forestry is accepting applications for one Nursery Operations Coordinator/Technician and one Nursery Foreman. The Nursery Operations Coordinator/Technician is a full-time, permanent job opportunity in Boscobel, the second opportunity is a project position in Hayward serving as Nursery Foreman. These positions provide leadership, direction, and service to the Department's nursery operations.

Salary Information

Starting wage is $24.72 per hour, plus excellent benefits. A 2% wage increase is anticipated on 6/30/2024. Use this Total Rewards Calculator to see an estimate of the total value of our competitive benefits package!

Pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan in effect at the time of appointment. Starting pay may vary for current state employees.

Job Details

Residency Requirement (project position): Wisconsin residency is required for project positions.

Travel: Travel is primarily within the immediate vicinity of the nursery on a regular basis, with longer distances periodically required including overnight travel.

Driver License Requirement: The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUE violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.

Project Position Details: The project position has been authorized until July 2026. Project positions are eligible for all benefits (including paid time off). Individuals appointed to a project position are not placed on a probationary period.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Factors: Employee could be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of an hour or more, and temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Refer to the job description for further information on the physical requirements of the position.

Probation: A 12-month probationary period will be required. The classification title for this position is Forestry Technician - Advanced (schedule 06, range 14) . This position is not represented in a collective bargaining unit and is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Background Check: Finalists for this position may be required to allow DNR to conduct a background check or other checks to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.

I-9 Requirement: The Department of Natural Resources does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9 upon hire.

Qualifications

You need to have all of the following:
  • Nursery, horticulture, forestry, or farming experience
  • Leadership experience (i.e., coordinate, lead, train, and direct the work of others)
  • Experience operating farm and/or farm implements and/or construction equipment (e.g., tractor, skid-steers, bulldozer and/or a backhoe)
  • Effective communication skills to accomplish business objectives
Any of the following would be nice to have:
  • Building construction or building repair including plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
  • Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook, or similar word processing, spreadsheet and email software
