Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

The Nursing Education Program Inspector performs the below duties:

• Reviews and processes applications to establish nursing education programs in the Commonwealth.
• Conducts visits regarding approved nursing education programs as directed by the Board and in accordance with requirements established in Board of Nursing Regulation.
• Contacts the education programs to arrange for a mutually agreed upon time for the visit.
• Survey visits will include: visiting education program facilities; reviewing curriculum content, resource materials, program records and students records; interviewing faculty, administration, students and clinical agency representatives; and assessing program facilities.
• Prepares written report of visits and submits to the Nursing Education Program Manager or the Deputy Executive Director within three weeks of the visit. This may occur electronically.
• Appears at the Education Informal Conferences or Formal hearings, as required.
• Keeps Nursing Education Program Manager and Deputy Executive Director aware of trends and issues related to nursing education that may impact policy making and have the potential to impact DHP.
• Maintains confidentiality of all education program reports and information at all time, according to BON Laws and Regulations.
• Assists with the development of template documents related to nursing education to enhance efficiency of survey visits and/or applications to establish nursing education programs.
• Assists in probable cause review of investigated disciplinary complaints regarding nursing education programs, applying relevant law/regulations, and submitting a written summary to Deputy Executive Director while ensuring agency standards of probable cause review are met.
• Attends meetings in person or via telephone conference with Board of Agency staff, as needed.
• Maintains records and visit noted in accordance with DHP Records Retention Policy.
• Responsible for timely submission of time sheets. Submits time sheets within one day of the close of the pay period (weekly).
• Responsible for the timely submission of travel requests and travel reimbursements.
• Attends ongoing systems training as required.
• Maintains current knowledge of Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Attends Nurse Licensure Compact training as required.

This position is assigned to the Tidewater area of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possess experience in nursing education program development, teaching and/or evaluation methods.
• Considerable knowledge of and experience with nursing education and its principles.
• Knowledge of laws and regulations governing nursing education programs.
• Effective public contact and organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, and word processing skills in a Windows environment.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze technical issues and make valid recommendations, to work independently and set priorities, to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to prepare detailed reports.
• Live in and be willing to travel around Tidewater area of Virginia -area for nursing education program visits.
